I have a new caravan (4 months old)  I have lost all the 12volt electrics, and after consultaion with the service department, have been told that it is likely to be a battery charger failure. With the admirable help from the dealer - Campbells in Preston (who are not local to me) and coachman they have found me someone who will mend it under warranty.  How nice to have a can do element to life- after reading about people who buy at caravan shows and then cannot get warranty issues fixed- I heave a sigh of relief.  But my question is

I believe that a battery, once completely discharged is useless.  Is this correct?  If so I need a new one before the van is fixed.  I have been offered a new battery if it is charger failure.

Not necessarily, I have brought some back to life by checking and topping up the distilled water to cover the plates and then re-charging. But if they are offering you one free I would take it. Surely you don't want to put it in until it's all working though?

If you find your caravan battery quickly goes flat in storage it may be that you have left it switched to van , this position allows power to the caravan relays . If you set the switch in the middle, this is the off position ( nothing draws power from the battery in this position ) .

Nothing that is except a phenomenon known as natural discharge!

All batteries will slowly discharge if left unused.

I always say that when in storage if you can not hook up, you should remove the battery and take it home, connect to a proper leisure battery automatic charger and save a heap of moneyon replaceing failed batteries, to say nothing of inconvenient flat batteries just when you need them.

David.
