Having just bought a used caravan - I am unsure what is the best to do about the tyres.

I am unsure of the age of them - I have heard that you should get them changed but the ones on the caravan are in good condition and I dont want to change them for the sake of it.

What would everyone do if the tyres were good but the age was not known?

Cheers

Louise x

go to your local tyre dealerand get him to check the age and conditionof the tyres, the manufacturingdate is on the side of thetyre but there could be damage onthe sidewalls or between the treads especially if the van hasbeen stood in one position for a long time

You can find the date on the side wall, it's close to the rim and most often after 'DOT'. This millennium it will be a 4 digit week/year date, ie 2407, week 24 of 2007
Last century it was 3 digits plus an arrow?, not worth explaining except to say far to old to use.

Apparent condition though is not the important factor unless they are less than seven years old, if they are then careful inspection of the whole tyre for cracks or bulges may be enough, if older than seven, (many say five!), then best replaced regardless.

The other thing is you don't know the history, how long it's been stood perhaps with tyres soft?, how many times has it been curbed? It's £60-£80 for a fresh pair of tyres, how much grief and ££££'s will that save if one blows half way there or back??

Taking my Combi to the tyre place now for a quick check before we head for France. I was told the tyres were quie new when I got it, but you never know. Can't fathom out the date on a Trelleborg - they don't seem to have normal markings.

Never mess with tyres - it's all you've got between you and the road.

hi brought my van a few years ago came back from somerset and a blow out on the offside.

Luckily had a spare so managed to change it on an A road dodging traffic.VERY SCARY. luckily was only doing about 40mph so thought aaa just the wheel arch cover missing,

got this priced up from a local dealer £80 for a bit of plastic

Took it to a local caravan centre and they quoted me £1000 + labour  Not got a heart problem but did have then.

found out the blow out had caused more damage than i could see

ripped the inner wheel arch to shreads (plastic replace)

ripped the slats from the bunk bed (wood replace)

put a hole in the floor (wood, try and repair)

moved my water heater a foot from where it was meant to sit split water pipes.(Try and reseat and replace pipes)

scratched all paintwork a foot around wheel arch(tyre tread flapping round)spray repair needed

wheel arch cover(plastic replace)

and wheel trim (plastic replace)

Luckily enough E&L caravan insurance said they would cover the repairs but not the tyre(all for not checking the tyre age)

So my advice to you would be take a few hours to take the wheels to a tyre specialist and get them checked,OR spend an hour on the phone to the insurnce company, a day or 2 touring  round the caravan repair centres getting quotes, then an hour to get it to the caravan centre for repair and another hour to bring it back home oooo and not forgetting loosing the caravan for a few weeks whilst its being repaired.

GET THEM CHECKED BUDDY

 Dont make my mistake

cheers kev

p.s Happy caravaning
