Hi, When I switch over to car the battery charge indicator goes down and presses firmly against the discharged stop. Is this right? Thank you

Check you connections, if it goes down like that, rather than the normal rest position, yo may have the polarity wrong in your cars socket.

What does it do in "van" position?

Ours had to be in "van" position for the car to charge it while towing.

"car" position on ours used from the car battery to run the 12v in the van, for emergency use only.
