After switch on the red light comes on, following instructions we wait 3 minutes and try again. When it starts up there is black smoke poring from the outside vent, we switch it off.

Does this mean we need a new heater??? help anyone

No it means a bit of maintenance or at worst a new burner module, not a whole heater

Black smoke is caused by two possibles, the simple one is a spider has made a nest in the inlet tube within the burner, depends on your abilities whether you clean it out or get someone to do it.

The other is corroded ends to the burner which means a replacement

had this with mine did as gary said cleaned out the spidro no more black stains up the side of my van.no problem all season its been working overtime.
