Does anyone know of and can recommend a mains or 12v tyre inflator that can pump up a caravan tyre?
I have a little 12v one which is fine for the car tyres but can't pump up to the 4.5bar/60+psi required for the caravan.

The Halfords Tyre Inflator will happily inflate to over 70PSI, however when tyres are already inflated above 50 psi we recommend removing some of the air from the tyre to say 40psi to allow the pump to inflate the tyre gradually. If you try to inflate tyre which are already in excess of 50 psi this may cause the pump to stall

Thanks Michael - I wonder if that's what mine does. I might try that trick with the one I've got first as with the van tyres at 4.2 bar it won't top up the last bit as it stalls.

I have 2 of the Halfords 12 v cigar lighter jobs. One in the car. I use both, and have not had problems. The gauges are fairly accurate, but I use my digital one for final pressure check.

good point, NEVER trust the gauge on a tyre pump, most are wrong.

there is not one general pressure, mine is 37 psi.some caravans with the same size tyre are 42 psi, some are 40 psi.it depends on weight of the MPTLM of the van,or max gross and the size of tyre.also depends on type of tyre,

Mine are 4.5 bar or 65 psi which is a right pain in the btm as both my little hand pressure guages don't go that high and my foot pump is a struggle to use to top them up.
Back to Halfords for another guage to add to my collection!

nohing o do with the pressure im affraid you can get a compressor that will have 150 psi but if the cfm is not there then it can not inflate a tyre to 150 psi cfm if somthing to do with free air displacement all i know is my tyre machine runs at 110 psi but one of those 120 psi compressors will never run it!¬!!!!!!

Mine is the RAC600 12v compressor and I've just had a reply back from Ring Automotive who make it to say:

"The only reason I can think why it would “stall”, as you describe it, is due to it overheating. I would not recommend lowering the pressure in your tyre to give it a running start to inflate to 60psi. The pressure is well within the compressors limits and should inflate to 60psi with out cutting out. However if you have already inflated a tyre from 45 to 60 psi the motor may be warm and you should allow it to cool."

Sooo - I shall give it another go from cold to see if it can top up the van tyres. Last time I used it I had already done both rear tyres on the car then went straight on to the van and it never occurred to me that the motor might be too hot!
As for accuracy when I checked the pressure the compressor was reading for the car tyres against my hand held guage it was spot on.

A belated addition to this post - I've found the answer after preparing for our first outing of the year in Feb - I was using the inflator as instructed in the manual and it kept stalling - then I switched the car engine on and hey presto - it'll pump has high as you like!
So, although it doesn't say to do so in the instructions, it needs the engine to be running to give it a bit more voltage then it's fine.

always have engine running to stop the battery drain when using the pump.leave the stearing wheel lock ON then someone can not drive it off.
