Evening all!

Where can I get a staple gun from that fires staples about three quarters of an inch across?

Is it better to hire one or are they cheap to buy?

The local stores only have staples up to "G" size which aren't large enough to reconstruct the interior woodwork.

Cheers

Chris :)

i have a tacwise 140EL bought from argos on special offer recently.

It uses 140 staples 6mm to 14mm deep.

They are only 10mm wide though.

Never seen any bigger than that. Why do you need them that wide?

It's what was used on the original repair to hold the framework together.

Thanks Simon, yup, you're quite right

I just phoned the local hire shop and he wasn't in the slightest bit phased by someone wanting to fire staples of that size lol

They have a cordless one that will take 20mm staples and they will supply the staples too.

Cheers,

Chris :)

Hi Chris, re your post 6/4/2009
Do you remember the name of the hire shop? I'm having quite a job finding something to fire wide staples - in my van they are 25 mm wide with 16 mm legs. Did you need to support the back of the timber when you "fired" the stapler?

Regards,

HuwCanvey

Michael,
Thanks for this, but I'm looking for something that will insert a staple about 20-25 mm wide with legs about 16 mm long. Its to hold caravan spar butt-joins together. The one from HSS (see http://www.hss.com/index.php?g=52434&t=zoom) looked good but the staples were only 16 mm wide which placed them too close to the end of the spar.

Regards

HuwCanvey

Thanks both,
- Maths, these are exactly what I want, - now I've got to find a hire shop that handles them.

It's worth bearing in mind that it is the glue that provides the strength in the joint not the staples in fact steel staples and aluminium are not a very good combination so make sure you use some form of insulation between the two.

I used standard staples, or screws and polyurethane glue when I did my joints.

I bought a Tac-wise electric stapler from Argus as well - don't waste your money down that route:
1. They are not powerful enough to drive the staples home
2. If you try to use a shorter brad you will jam the gun
3. You will get better results from a cheap stapler.

Apparently the originals are fired in using a air staple gun so don't expect results using a hired electric one.

A pneumatic one would be the best, as it provides the real kick.
They are a bit steep in prices in UK (£ 200.00 mark)...... Its worth checking
a Swedish Web site (www.biltema.se) as they are selling pneumatic staplers
on their site (SEK 300.00 ish) and the rate of exchange is approx 11.20 SEK to the £ 1.00.
