Hi have just started looking at my Coachman Rallye 540L 2000, as I was getting a thunking noise on driving from stationery I drive a TD4 Freelander, I thought the noise was coming from the TD4, but I tested the damper on the Coachman, and it goes in slowly but on release, it slams out with force, took it apart removed a lot of hardened grease and cleaned it all, replaced the grease and it seemed to working again.Tried it this morning and thunk the tow hitch appears to be back like it was at the start.
Its a BPW damper. Anyone any ideas?
Sorry for the delay in replying, if I take the damper out and it closes under control and when released if it shoots out, then I guess it's knackered.I will try it this evening, thanks for the reply.
Got the damper off,wow completely different to what the manual states.
Removed the tow hitch, which released the damper. then took rear bolt off.Damper still held in place, removed the tube with damper inside, this revealed another hole which I could line up a drift pin on the damper.
On removing this I was able to extract the damper, which is a BPW, and I have been waiting for about two days for 7 companies to give quotes for replacements, including the local Compass reps, the number on the BPW is PAV/SR1.3MX1 02.3722.2900.
I can find it on BPWs site, but getting a price seems impossible. Perhaps tomorrow some of these cash strapped companies will contact me.
It may be worth seeing if a Alko damper has the same dimensions , i would have throught most caravan dampers will do pretty much the same job . Have a word with your local caravan dealers service dept .
I tried 4 dealers in my area, the front of the damper looks the same, also the body but the gas locker side differs, as it is flat steel with a 10mm hole, all the ALKO ones seem to have a bolt threaded end .The dealers state it's a special order, and have quoted me from £61.99 to £89.99 plus p&p, got it ordered from East coast caravans for £31.99, hopefully have the van fixed before next week.
