Hi. My good friends have spotted holes appearing in their (early 1990's) Avondale caravan. They are about 4 or 5 mm across and on various parts of the van. There is damp in the van and they are resealing and repairing various bits as they go along but are quite worried as they have also found black gunk oozing out from a pinprick they made in the interior wall that had bubbled a lttle bit. Any advice you can pass on please?? (haven't found anything specific using the search in the message boards so far..)

Are they in the aluminium and have a white powder around them? if so its the aluminium corroding, They can be cleaned up,filled and painted but if its only in a small area clean the holes up slightly and fill with silicone sealer and then place a dummy airvent over the top, no-one will notice the airvent doesn't do anything and the holes are nicely filled.

Hi. No white powder as far as I am aware, and they are positioned quite randomly so the dummy airvents might look a little odd in places. They are above one window, below another and 2 on the back wall...

Do you know what part of the van they are in? is it aluminium, plastic etc

Hi. It's the (intentionally) bobbly part, so I assume that's plastic???

It does sound like the aluminium, and if it's not deliberate holes it has to be corrosion. If it is just the odd small hole the other cheap option is to fill the hole with paintable sealer and buy a touch up pen thats the closest match and touch up the sealer.

sounds like water from the inside has corroded it from the inside out, as for the black stuff that be the mould and rotted wood.

Yep mould and loads of water , they really need to find out where the waters getting in and cure that problem and then try to dry out or replace the interior but it sounds like its been letting in water for a long time so there may be quite a bit of damp inside the wallboards, get loads of air through it during the good weather that'll help but the main thing is to try and stop water getting in
