Regarding removing the front, I found it to be straightforward. The only problem I found was that it had been nailed on in a few places and the nail heads were very difficult to spot although I believe that may have been done during the previous damp repair.
Just be careful if there are any cracks in it in case they break right through although by the sound of it, you're replacing the front so if you get one without any cracks you should be fine.
