hello all...

my name is jet....im very new to the site....and also new to caravaning.

I bought my first caravan about 5 months ago!!

and so want to start touring the uk!

due to the large amount of snow we had in our region....i was unable to get in and around fully to check it out!....the sale was done through a friend....and...well....as i wont go in to detail here....i will just say we are no longer bossom buddies!

i have discovered...much to my dismay....that most of the back part of the caravan is very damp.

i have removed all of the plasticy lining, and the thin foam from the whole roof inside...and the damp seems to be mostly at the back...but it is quite a large area!!...and also some on the front as the roof curves.

i have had the entire outside of the roof resealed....and a log burner installed prior to finding out about this tragedy.

a lot of the ply is very rotton.....and crumbling....and to be honest.....i just dont think my handy skills are up to the job!!...im ok...but not that good!

so i found this website....ive heard and read some great reviews about people on hear...so i thought i would give it a go.

can any body tell me what to do....do i just cut my losses and send it to the srcap yard....or is there really anything that can be done.....does anyone know the cost of such,...what seems to me, massive repairs??

hope someone can help me!!

many thanks!

Jet

It's sooo disappointing!

I'd definately recommend Wizard's website, Caradad's is really good too. Loads of information and advice.

When I found damp/rot (I vaccumed out a large area of ply!) in my first 'van I rang Dad (ex-joiner) and I quote "it's only plywood and insulation, nothing that can't be cut out and replaced" He did later admit it was a bit of a simplistic view but basically true.

It's a messy job, time consuming, at times frustrating - but definately do-able even with limited DIY skills, they improve enormously while your working. Once it's finished it's a fantastic sense of satisfaction knowing "I did that".

I had a soggy rotten van with the intentions of doing up, but even with the Wizards advice (Ta mate but it was too much in the end - remember the l'il Compass with the rotten floor?) I had to scrap it.

Instead of just towing it to a breakers yard - I broke it and sold the best bits. In all - ended up making a couple of hundred pounds profit 17.
I kept the upholstery, windows + chassis - Teardrop trailer here we come!
