We bought a 1994 Bailey Beachcomber Club 6 at the start of May, and it didn't have any user manuals with it. I've got the owners manual from Bailey, and am slowly trying to gather others... anyway

Using the van in north wales last week, and towards the end of the week the battery meter was down to 9V. We were using the EHU which was boiling the kettle quite happily on 240v, but it wasn't keeping the battery charged.

According to the caravan manual we have a Zig X2 Tranformer/Charger unit and a Zig CPX2 Distribution panel.

Is the problem simply that the battery has seen better days - it looks reasonably new, or is the transformer / charger unit dying?

How do I check the charging vs the condition of the battery?

Ta

Measure the battery voltage when you have the charger on , use a multi-meter , i would be expecting around 13.5 volts , if it's round 12 volts then your charger isn't working .
Or run your lights just on the battery and then turn on the charger , if the lights get brighter i would assume your charger is working .
If you'd like the zig manual send me a email ( address below ) and i'll email it to you .

I've got a 94 Pageant which was fitted with the same system as that, on the consumer unit the first switch powers up the Zig charger/Fridge/Water heater, if thats off it wont charge, My Zig X2 went faulty so I swapped it for a Plug in systems volta 3 stage charger which works a lot better than the zig did.

Thanks Wizard and Dale,

Dale - the water heater and fridge both work fine, although the carver did complain when the voltage was low!

So I took a volt meter to the battery and with everything plugged in and turned on the battery was reading 11.3v.

As teh meter is only reading 11.3v this suggests that the battery isn't getting enough charge rather than being defuncked?

Looking the manual - thanks wizard - there should be a 25amp fuse in-line to the battery - I guess that would be the next place to look?

Can anyone tell me what the X2 looks like. I've found the control panel but that just have spade connections that disappear into the loom, I can find the RCD, and then there are two blocks of fuses - one at the front and one at the rear adjacent to the RCD and the Carver2.

Any ideas?

Hi, my caravan has the X2 fitted, without going out to the van its approx 8" x  5" and 3" deep and full of holes for ventilation, with a green led half way up the right side to show its on & hopefully working. not sure how your selector switch is in your caravan, but in mine its a 3 way switch. top position is for charging/operating interior lights off car, middle position for running caravan 12v electrics direct off X2, and in the down position for charging caravan leisure battery + operating caravan  12v electrics at the same time, if non of this helps it could well be a fuse hidden in the bowels of the caravans wiring circuit. Having looked a bit further last night, I think that the previous owner decided to remove whatever transformer/charger was in place prior to us picking up the van.

Under the seat where the RCD and Carver are there is a lead that appears to come off the RCD and terminate in a plug cimilar to those you use in garden extension leads - three pins horizontal with the middle one out of line, there is also a pair of female spade terminals on a length of two core (black/red). There is nothing anywhere near the two leads that could be connections, and a few screw holes in the seat framework as if something has been removed... A volt meter on the spades gave me 11.3v.... direct to the battery???

So, if this is the case could I just put a trickle charger in between the two connections to charge the battery, or does it need to be something a little cleverer...?

Just looking through Lawrence's 94 Bailey pages I saw this:

http://www.bailey94.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/user/image/c00736.JPG

Is the black box the X2 as ours is a 94 Bailey, having the same RCD and the black cable with the spades and the white cable with the black plug connector, the only difference is ours doesn't have the black box!

My "black" box was next to the consumer unit/RCD under one of the front seats, it had 2 spade connectors for 12v and a mains feed from the consumer unit. exactly like Lawrence's, so yes that is the X2.

DaleR - your confirmation is very helpful, thanks.

HAving seen lawrence's photo, and having the wires on either side of the unit, I bought one at lunchtime from a caravan breakers in Tiverton for £22 - he hooked it up there and then to show it putting 13.5v into the battery.

All I need now is the time to wire it in - tonight maybe...

Thanks all for the assistance.

Sjbilton,

Sounds like you have got yourself a bargain there!, is it a X2 like the last?, power supplies/chargers seem to fetch an awful lot on ebay for some reason.

Have a look at some of these manuals I found online as a guide to wiring if needs be.

It works - well almost, a couple of the male spade connectors are loose, so aren't a secure joint, so it will put out 13+v one minute then nothing, waggle them and it's back to 13v - so time to take it apart and resolder the joints.

Getting there slowly.
