when changing my crocdile clips to new quick release ones, on the batterey
I accidently relaced them the wrong way round. The light was on , I instantly smelt burning and removed the clips. Only on for around 5 seconds. I opened the fuse cupboard and a puff of smoke bellowed out.
i then changed the terminals around and all seems okay????
the vans a wee bit stinky now - have I done any damage?
no fuses tripped during the time this happened....
what type of charger is it?does it purely charge the battery or does it supply to the 12v system as well?if it is only charge the battery you will be after a 3 stage automatic charger and that will be fine for the job and also safe to leave connected
Hi Gary, I did a daft trick like that when I first had my folding camper, so you weren't the first and I'm sure you won't be the last. There weren't loads of things that seemed to be polarity sensitive however the Truma water heater was one of them. Luckyly I had only blown the little 20mm fuse on the circuit board. Good luck mate.
No it will be a charger/power supply, you cannot just put a charger in there as it wont work as a power supply, unless you want to keep switching everything off everytime you want to recharge the battery. If it's had reverse polarity applied it might have just blown a diode/diodes internally, possibly a fuse.
Had to replace a charger/power supply on a caravan about 7 years ago. It was a straightforward job if you've got any diy skill but the unit cost about seventy quid then!
