After poking at a soft patch at the back of my caravan. I have discovered the dreaded damp. I have removed the plywood and found that the frame is also rotten. I have cut out the rotten wood and hope to start rebuilding the frame.

Water seems to have got in behing the rear light cluster.

Before I go any further I need a bit of help with the following:

What is reccomended to stick new 3mm ply to the frame and polystyrene walls?

I will have to remove a couple of external trim strips. These seem to be riveted on. Whats the best mastic for replacing them?

Do I have to slide out the black rubber strip that covers the screws or does it just pull off?

Is it worth coating the frame/ply with anything before putting it all back together?

This is the first time iv done this but am a woodwork (technology) teacher so should manage the timber side of things.

Sorry for the list of questions but I would appreciate any help that can be given.

Cheers Mark

I have some pics but cant seem to upload them :(

the black rubber just pulls out but can be a bit of a problem putting it back in,the rivets you say that hold the trim rail on are usualy small screws, sounds like some of the heads have come of,the best mastic you can get is called slickofix(i think thats the name for it) try and google it up,sets like concrete, be carefull when taking off the trim rail it can easily bend, get some one to help you, good luck.

I would use Sikaflex 512 Caravan mastic ( through it's expensive ) , Tiger Seal , Soudal Fix All .

I will have to remove a couple of external trim strips. These seem to be riveted on. Whats the best mastic for replacing them?
Roll mastic http://www.1carpc.co.uk/wcdr/sealants.htm
, Sikaflex 512 , Tiger Seal .

Do I have to slide out the black rubber strip that covers the screws or does it just pull off?
Lever off with a screw driver , if the plastic trim has gone hard i would replace it .

Is it worth coating the frame/ply with anything before putting it all back together?
I wouldn't think it would be necessary , as you will have stopped water getting into the caravan again by resealing it .

If you email me your pictures i'll get them on the net for you .
