Any ideas?

THe bearings seem fine, no free play etc but there is a rubbing sound from one wheel.
I tried to take the brake drum off but it wouldn't budge, does the circlip under the bearing cap cover hold it on?
The other side seems fine and this one spins quite freely but it does rub and make this scraping noise at one point in the revolution.
Any help appreciated.

Hi

I suspect your brake drum and bearing are in one piece.

Older caravan brake drums/bearings are like this, although I've never heard of one being held on by a circlip - normally a split pin in my (limited) experience.

Could it be the brake shoes rubbing?

Could it be the brake shoes rubbing?

I suspect it may be, I just don't know how to get at them.

When I knocked the Silver cap in the middle off, there is a large nut underneath with some Orange stuff on in the hole in the middle of the drum.
Running round the outside of the hole is a huge circlip which is why I wondered if that is what is holding it.

I've just got no experience of drum brakes, I'm only used to doing disks on cars!

If it is a shoe rubbing, is it a big deal or will it wear it away completely?

Look at the back of the brake drum.

There should be a hole (sometimes covered by a rubber plug).

Turn the wheel until you see, with the aid of a torch, a slotted screw. By turning this screw it releases or tightens the shoes aigenst the drum.

There are usually two screws, one for each brake drum.

It/they should be tightened as far as it/they will go and the wheel locked, then slackend one notch.

To remove the brake drum to check the shoes, you must slacken off these screws completely, then the drum can be removed easily, although sometimes gentle persuasion with a rubber mallet is necessary. Go easy as brake drums are cast metal and can break.

Update on my last post.

That should have read that there are two shoes in each drum, therefore two adjustable screws in each drum.

However, sometimes one shoe does not have an adjustment screw so do not be worried if you only see one screw.

if you taking drum off like the one you described you have to remove the long split pin and undo the big nut.

Thanks guys, and great link LobeyDosser

It all seems fine now? I went down armed with tools and a torch, jacked it up and no noise, no rubbing or anything. I checked the brake operation and all seemed fine.
When I spun the hub last time though, a load or dirt did fall out of the bottom so I wonder if it was just that making a noise.

still, I'll know what to do for the servive now!
