Does any one have any experience or knowledge of charging leisure batteries. I have just aquired an 80ah one. Thinking of useing solar panal to keep it topped up. Does this method work, does it depend on type of battery. any thougts or opinions or expeiences most wellcome.
you need min 50watt is about 3+ amps pannel and charge controller or if you going for trickle charge 13 watt 0.98amps will keep the batt topped up while not in use and no regulator needed 15watt and above you need them
No use at all It's only one eighth of an amp when in full sun. I bought one to keep the battery on my campervan topped up, when not in use. It was a total waste of time, even with two of them connected (my friend also bought one and gave it to me in disgust). Spend your money on a proper one, if you want it to do anything. Maplins have a reasonable range if you look at their website.
What Wildie says is correct - 13W minimum.
Hi spend your money wisely-- any size of battery being it an 85 amp or a 110 amp needs a good charging regularly but you can keep a top up going in using a solar panel, we have had a 10 watt one for years using a folding camper but since getting a caravan we have bitten the bullet, got a 60 watt panel and it keeps it topped up nicely. By the best you can afford then it saves you spending twice. cheers gary
I use a Topray 13W. It keeps my 88Ah leisure battery topped up through the winter. Maplins sell them, at around £75-£80. Or their is a used one currently on Ebay, ending soon.
we got ours from a shop on Ebay, a folding 60watt, with all the gubbins at the back and cable also there was a bag for it to go in, it said on the advert that the zip on the bag was broken but when it arrived all safely very packaged it was intact and no broken zip. £136.00 for it and we thought that it was a good price. gary
I got one fitted on my Sterckeman when I had it. Its an 85W panel and was £550 incl fitting with a 20year guarantee. When I changed the van to my Cameo I re-fitted it myself. I have 2 110Ah batteries connected and keeps them charged fine.
Battery is now charged up to 12.74 A, is that enough to put back on caravan?
If you mean 12.74 volts, the answer is yes, providing you tested it about an hour after taking it off charge. A fully charged battery usually gives a reading of about 12.8V.
