The system on my Swift appears to be similar. I find the system works well even though it took a little bit of getting used to.
Fill the aquaroll and set the pump for external. The system will then, as you say, fill the inboard tank and supply the water system at the same time. Since the pump is also filling the tank, the supply to the taps will be reduced a bit.
When the aquaroll is empty, switch the system to inboard and then re-fill the aquaroll.
When the inboard tank is empty, switch to external and start the sequence again.
This way, you do not need to go for more water halfway through cleaning your teeth or having a shower, you just need to flick the switch.
