All depends on the charger you have fitted, in general, from the early 90's most 'chargers' are in fact '12v power sources' with an output of a stable 13.8v at around 10amps and above on tap, this is quite capable of running the van without a battery at all.
Before this time and with few exceptions, again the output would be a maximum of 13.8v if your luckily! but the amperage available was much lower and in the order of 4amp. Further, the output is not particularly stable and relies on a battery to 'smooth' it, this then is of no real use to 'run' the van without a battery, but, could/can be used for minimal purposes without harm.
