The securing screws of my Swift Challenger tail light lenses screw into what look to be BA threaded grommets which are inserted in to the panel of the caravan. After undoing the screws to remove the lens cover to investigate a problem two of them have disappeared down behind the panel. Now only two are able to be used.
Does anybody know where to get spares for these? They are perished with age and I woukld intend to replace all 8 of them.
its a long time ago i had this same problem on our old van,as far as i can remember i found some steel nuts of the same size and using the original screws without fitting the lens i glued the nuts in with strong glue.when dried i removed the screws and fitted the lens.if you use a good epoxi glue should be fine.you could go to a breakers yard for second hand one.make sure the screws line up when gluing any deviation will mean the lens holes will not line up.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I went into a caravan spares shop, with a similar explantion about what i was wanting and for similar reasons. (1995 Swift Classic Alouette)
The owner went to one of his stands and produced a packet with no problem at all, so I would imagine any good shop (and a few bad ones) would be able to provide you with some.
As to the proper name to allow a web search, I'm afraid i threw out the empty packet!
I repaired mine with wall fixings for plasterboard walls.
As they are made of metal, I have always been a bit concerned that they might damage the fibre glass panel they are fixed into, due to vibration.
However, they have been there for about three years now with no problems. They do have the advantage that they are fixed in place and do not drop into the inaccesible void behind the panel like the rubber ones.
Hi, I had this problem with a Sterling and when it was in the main dealer for a repair I mentioned it to the workshop who said it was a really common problem and put a few in my hand. I would go to the main dealer and ask them really nicely.
Wot Malkeiron said. These are still used on my 2011 Swift so should be readily available. Just make sure the screws are stainless. Being rubber they form a seal as well as a mechanical fixing, which cavity fixings don't.
