HELP! Got an old ABI 1986 caravan, hubby has rebuilt it with all the tips I have found here on this fantastic web site, I have lurked and clicked away and we are now nearing the end of many weekends digging out damp and repairing the wall and replacing the floor at the back.
My question is, we will be replacing the boards at the back of the van but the rest of the van has covered wallboards throughout - CAN I JUST PAPER OVER THE LOT OF THE CARAVAN USING A VINLY PAPER?? Read somewhere that nothing will stick to it - REALLY DON'T WANT TO TELL HUBBY WE HAVE TO STRIP THE LOT!! Can anyone advise.
I hope it sticks, I did mine about a fortnight ago and it hasn't fallen off yet! I used a wallpaper adhesive designed to stick paper on top of vinyl which somebody very kindly aquired for me.
there is a PVA premixed addiesive for use on vinyl covered coatings.sorry have not got the makers or the name, I am retired now from decorating,if it comes to mind I will post.
------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
Pete.
Many thanks to you all for your replies, knew I could rely on someone to have gone through this! Hubby will be delighted he doesn't have to peel it all off. Will let you know how we get on. Hoping to have a first trip in the caravan 1st week in September, when hopefully it will be dry and safe. Thanks again for all your helpful posts, could not have done this project without the help of this site. Wizard and Alan Parker amazing help with all their posts over the years.
hi have you thought of "paste the wall" wallpaper it is excellent stuff very strong and as it says you paste the wall not the paper with ready mixed paste. you can cut the paper almost to the correct size before you stick it on then trim it with a sharp knife. there are some really nice random patterns that don't need matching .vinyl paper is ok but it needs to dry into the wall that's because the vinyl layer tends to seal the water in and it can take quite a while to dry if you are papering over water resistant wall boards
I have done a bathroom makeover Click Here to see. I used wallpaper (not vinyl).
The preparation of the walls; sand down to provide a key and get rid of the gloss. I then used diluted PVA to seal the walls. To hang the wallpaper, waterproof wallpaper paste.
It has been up there 2 years now and it has not come off!!
hi all,i do all my own wallpapering at home & have found that a plastic paper smother to be a lot better than a smoothing brush,it gets right into tight corners. you can get one from any wallpaper shop
------------- no day you learn something,is wasted
You could give the wallboards a coat of zinsser bullseye 123 first which has excellent adhesion properties and will help the wallpaper adhesive bond to the wallboards. I would recommend a heavy duty ready mixed adhesive applied with a roller to the wallpaper and allowed to soak as per manufacturers instructions. Cut any intricate pieces before pasting allowing about an inch all round for trimming. These pieces can be pasted on a piece of lining paper or similar to keep your paste table clean. Hope this helps!

I have trawled through your site from start to finish and I am astounded what can be acheived !
If I can cure my problems at least half as well I'll be well chuffed
Lawrence - ditto Ems & Jim's comment. What a fantastic website - now in my faves. I'm sure I will be using the tips during the ownership of our Elddis Whirlwind (collecting tomorrow) As it is a 1995 unit, there are sure to be issues - as an avid DIYer, I will be sure to find things to sort.
Pete
This reminds me of a night many years ago involving a little drink,
A good friend of mine was living in a static caravan and his wife was due to present their first born, after the happy event and before she was back home we decided to paint and paper their home to give her a pleasant surprise.
We started well but decided to do a little celebrating as we worked, all went well until we came to a window, now after a few drinks we couldn't figure out how to get around it and just papered over it "well cut it out later" was the answer to our problem well as you can imagine there were more windows and the same answer was applied to each, after a while it got pretty dark squint inside and we ran out of refreshments so stopped for the night.
In the morning we were as surprised as my wife with to outcome which required a team of 5 to sort out the mess in time for the homecoming, almost 30 years later we still laugh about it, so beware if you start, only have soft drinks in the van :-}
Thanks Ems and Jim, and Pete for your comments about my website. I only started it to say a thankyou to others on this site who helped me with my "little" problem.
It has grown over time so much so I have recently run out of webspace(55Mb) with my ISP (Virgin Media). I have loads more to put on it, so I am looking into the options.
Since starting it (the web site) we have been away a great deal, well, when we can with work commitments. Where I store the caravan, at my wifes workplace. She often works at the weekends to meet deadlines, so to keep her company, I work on the caravan, while she plays with her figures, otherwise she would be there alone. Recently she has not had to go in and I'm feeling frustrated as there are some things I want to do!!
just want to say lawrence what a great sight having just got a bailey pageant has giving me alot of incite into the jobs that can be done keep up the great work . lee
