Hello

Being complete novices we failed to take any precautions last winter leaving the caravan in winter storage, as a result two small areas of damp have occurred one at the rear near side where an intermediate rail is following the line of the rail for about a foot and one under the offside front window. It looks like the van has been resealed along the awning rail some years ago and this is now looking a bit tatty.

I was wondering whether it would be a good idea to get a cover for the forthcoming winter or would a straight forward replacement of sealant around rails and windows subject to good weather be a better bet.

We have also been advised  by helpful more experienced caravanners to leave the fridge door open, fill the sinks with bleach water solution, hang tights up containing cat litter to absorb condensation. We have also been advised to put shake and vac on the carpets before leaving.

Has anyone used a cover or any of these tips with success

Many thanks

Jim

I Bought a breathable cover from ebay last year for about £70 For 17 to 22 ft van it was brill no damp nothing. We always leave all int doors open and seats on end on floor so air can circulate. Leave fridge door open a bit, also bought 2 dehumidifiers for £20 these soak up any damp in the air. You then plug them into the mains to dry them out so you can use them again. Drain off water and toilet. Not sure about sinks though. Block up any vents to stop any pests getting in.

I would have the damp areas sorted as it will only get worse when you use the van again
