Hi all,

I have recently purchased an abi marauder caravan 1980's. I want to reseal the exterior of the van starting at the roof / awning rails and working my way down. Which sealant would be my best buy for a good job. I can't find any damp in the van but the previous owner has painted all the walls but not the roof (my concern is has he covered mould or mildew marks over). There are no soft / spongy parts inside the van that I can find. Although on the outside of the van there is like a small blister but if you press on it nothing happens with it. Any ideas, thanks. Penny.

Hi,

Most people on here use W4 bedding mastic type roll

http://www.caravanspares2repairs.co.uk/w4-mastic-sealing-strip-32mm-x-5m-128-p.asp

But then some people recommend using seamseal CV or Silkaflex 512

The roll stuff is easier and cleaner to use and most of the fixit club seem to use it.

Silkaflex seems to be from everyone i've spoken to the best, but its also an adhesive so once its on...Good luck getting it off if a mistake is made (from experience) and can be messy.

All though seamseal and silkaflex can be messy, I used masking tape to get a clean edge when resealing my van the same way you do when painting.

Have a look at the fixit club and see what you think you can do and how best to go about it for you.

Hope it helps!

I used seamseal on my 1990 Avondale, the reason being that the rails had very deep channels which wouldn't have been filled by Mastic on a roll. Be prepared for a time consuming and very messy job!
