hello, i'm hoping one of you knowledgable people will be able to help. we've just attempted to replace the original (completely goosed) jockey wheel on our 1980 elddis caravan, only to find that the new one doesn't fit. on investigation we found that the new JW is 42mm but the original is 41mm.

are we likely to be able to find one to fit or is there something we can do to the jockey wheel or the hole in the A-frame to 'make' it fit without wrecking the whole job.

many thanks in advance 17

Is it the diameter of the tube thats the problem or the hole fixing spacing?

Did the jockey wheel not come with a new clamp? you can unbolt them and replace quite easily.

NEVER enlarge the holes in the A frame.

thanks for the reply 17

it is the diameter that is the problem, the new jockey wheel has a clamp but we can't see how we could fix it on without hacking into the a-frame cover as the exsiting jockey wheel tube slots down through a hole in the cover and a-frame.

the original 41mm JW was a snug fit and the 42mm won't go anywhere near.

i'm about to trawl round the nearest caravan breakers to see if i can find an old one to fit but if i'm unsuccessful, as a complete non-techie person, would enlarging the frame hole weaken the structure? or are we best off sacrificing the frame cover to fit the clamp?

sorry for the barrage of questions, i'm discovering the joys of owning a caravan that's drawing her pension 17

I suggest you contact Papa Pip as he is into older caravans.

I am not on my main PC so I have not got his address but you will find it on one of the forums here.

Hi leccyshep

I have actually just recently bought a new jockey wheel on Ebay .Mine was 48mm but they come in a few different sizes. They also come with a new clamp so your just unbolt the old one and fit your new one.

thank for the advice everyone, we've managed to cobble together a working one using the innards of the new one and the shaft of the old, so we have 3 wheels on our wagon once again!
