17 Hi everyone,

Got the bathroom window  out of our 92 swift and discovered the frame is rotten .Couldn't believe it was so bad !!!!!! Shock

Only good thing is it looks like its dried out.

i'v tried looking on the various sites to try to find out how to replace the wood ect, its got plastic corners but the wood is so rotten at one side it will have to be replaced

. I can see how to reseal the window but can anyone tell me where to look for help to do the frame.

Also would it be wise to reseal the hanging strip outside as well????

Thanks for any help, Look forward to your replies, 17

Have a read thro my repair here http://www.1carpc.co.uk/wcdr/my-damp-repairs.htm it's got pictures showing the old frame and new frame with plastic corners . It is straight forward to replace , buy the correct size wood , cut to the right length , stick and clamp in place , staple the corners . Go careful when removing old wood that's stuck to the alloy skin , i used a wallpaper scraper very carefully .

Also would it be wise to reseal the hanging strip outside as well???? yes

I replaced a large back section of my Daughters caravan after looking at Wizards site, and to be honest it was easyer than I thought it would be,it only cost her just under £200 for everything, wall boards, frames, sealants, window strip Etc,Etc.got all our stuff from O'Leary`s which is also on Wizards site,it took us 5 Sundays to do it all,and a lot cheaper than the quote she got for about £1900+.

HI,

Thanks for both the replies, i'v got to admit we died when we saw the frame, and was also surprised to see how thin the skin  of the caravan is, and a bit worried about removing the frame from it. Better be very careful, we looked on your site wizard which was very helpful for everything, we didn't even realise the mastik was on a roll, the rubber surround is full of the gungy stuff but trying the plastic scraper now. it doesn't look as though the rubber strip was stapled before, would  you staple it anyway, befor putting in the white strip.? the wall boards have obviously been damp at some point, but seem dried out and very powdery, so were scraping them off carefully, it does look worse than you think doesn't it. Having looked at other peoples caravan projects we think we've come off very  lightly,

Anyway Many THANKS17  To everyone for posting, we are slow doing things but will try to let you know how we go on.........

Hi,

just an update, we took all the wall board off and replaced the window frame, it was n't too bad a job, the hardest part was trying to find a stapler to go through the frame corner plastic bits. anyway we decided to buy new window seal instead of cleaning the old one up, found some off a site on the fix it club site,    ( thats amazing everything you need to read is on there).

Were now busy papering all the interior of the sink/toilet area, after finding a lovely vynl paper.yes we found it a lot easier with ready mix paste and pasting the wall.

ONE thing were not sure whether to replace the original plastic seals in the roof joints ect, or to go round  it with sealant,

and could we use silka flex ?

Only thing i'm worried about is getting the sink/shower unit back in, it was a very tight fit........

Anyway Many Thanks to the wizard the fix it site and all the other helpful posts that we recieved, 17

Not quite sure what you mean here could you describe where the plastic seals are , do you mean the plastic trims in the awning rails ? , Or could you post on here or email me a picture .

WELL DONE It's great to hear you've got on well with your repair 1717

Hi,

SORRY

we meant the plastic strip between the wall board and the roof top inside the van, we think it was just for decorative puposes to finish the seams off, wish we could put photo's on were rubbish at that. got to say with all the help from everywhere it wasn't as daunting as we thought, when you strip them down( vans i mean17 ) their simpler than you imagine them to be. I'v been suprised to read just how many damp vans there are.........

Hi Lizzie i would recommend you replace the plastic trim as it does act as a sort of barrier between the ceiling and walls , and also between front and side walls .

I noticed that where people have damp in their van on either the wall , or ceiling , the damp is most of the time stopped from transfering to the dry wall / ceiling because the trim is in the way .
