Hi Everyone, have just managed to wrangle a new pump out of my dealer under warrenty and was suprised to see the price of same (almost £50). I have the external type that sits in the water bottle but my last van had an internal pump. It's not something you think about until it fails, so does internal have any advantage over external or vice versa?

never had an internal pump so can not says what benefits you have.just had one burn out from new and it lasted 6 years so can not complain.lucky i carry spares.

My experience of the internal pump is it can easily suck in air and become very noisy/noisey.The big advantage is the fact that it doesn't require any micro switches, as it relies on pressure drop.Given the choice, I really couldn't make up my mind, as I'm pretty much 50-50.(Each have their advantages/disadvantages).

Personally i prefer the external pumps, either Thames crystal or whale, not ford of the reich one.

They dont take up your storage space, they dont fill your van with water when they leak, (& believe me thats regular away) you can't hear them when running as much as an onboard pump & as said about £50 or less for external, could be up too £100 plus for onboard replacement & certainly £75.

I've only ever had external pumps and in 30+ years only had one fail (in my first 3 years).

When it failed I learnt to always have it hanging vertically in the water butt. Never had a failure since and I don't carry a spare.

As pointed out they are horrendously expensive.

Seems much more logical to have a pump in the barrel. That way it cannot take in air. Preumably on board pumps are really meant for vans with onboard tanks.
