It is very hard to find the 3mm ply used in the walls, and a couple of mm wont make much difference.
I got some from a builders merchant, where they get it one sheet either side of the stack of thick plywood, it is there to protect the surface, and as packaging gets thrown out....so I got it for free!
If you need to use thicker ply, the main thing is to make sure that the window rubbers have enough slack to take it up. The rubber is usually a few mm bigger than than the complete thickness of the wall, but remember you need some sealant in there as well between the rubber and the outer skin of the van.
I think it is unlikely for the extra weight to make much difference, unless you are doing the entire side, with 12mm ply or something like that!
Good luck with the repair, and keep posting! Everyone here is very helpful, and usually someone has had the same problem before!

Thanks guys we are a long way off boarding it yet,so we are going to try and get some 3mmish,we went to our local BQ nothing,so im going to check out wickses at the w/e,Van is tarped up and all crappy wood exposed she is drying out nicely,we think we can save the awning timber there are just two really soft spots about 3inchs long, the rest on closer inspection isnt as bad,it looked worse because it was so dark, but now seeing it drying out its not all doom, and under wizards instruction we are doing small bits at a time. But i dont feel so bad at all about it now,i can see its going to be ok.Will add some new pics tomorrow
