sorry for a battery thread, but just need to help confirm a problem

Sprite Quattro - 110ah battery and Nordelettronica NE143-p charger.

noticed yesterday that the battery was flat (been on EHU for last week). i couldnt turn on the alarm hence found the issue.

the 12v and 240v run fine on EHU
but i noticed that there is no voltage increase/decrease with the charger on or off. I would have expected a change when turned on, but no.
This leads me to beleive that the charger is caput!....but i dont get how the 12v circuit is still working, so assume this is a sperate control of some sort.

i have put the battery on a car charger all night and it wont go to 100%. i.e. i got 12.75v on charge and as soon as i remove charger it started dropping to 12.6v in a matter of minutes and seems to remain steady at this voltage at the moment.
This leads me to beleive the batery is just trying to recover from a period of being flat, so needs a few cycles.

any thoughts?

incidentally, van is not yet 12m old, so under warranty, but i cant get it to the dealer at the mo..no towbar and cant get off/on drive without a mover anyhow.

There is a known issue with some of these chargers failing, so it could be that. You will need to speak to your dealer.

yes i have since found there are issues, but it seems that the key problem is that the 12v supply shuts down. Mine isnt doing this as all the lights etc work.

i'm gonna call the dealer in the morning, just hoping they can help me out without having to drag the caraven to them.

Fuse in the charger which i presume is OK you get 12v to the lights, But there is usually a fuse between the charger and battery.

checked all the fuses direct to the battery and charger, and these were all OK. I understand that there is another fusebox, so just need to check that (only read the manual late last night in detail)...hey I'm a bloke, we dont read manuals (normally!)

Not had the chance to call the dealer yet.

next job after checking the other fuses is to go fiddle with all the connections and make sure they are OK.

Its almost as if the battery is isolated from the circuit, hence it wont charge. This seems to be holding its charge at the moment, so no problems with that.

i'll keep you posted.

Mine is an inline fuse between the charger & battery, Hard to see as its tucked down under the charger & has about 2mm of wire spare.

I plan to replace the wires this year, Well i have been planning to replace them for several years. oops..

I appear to have a battery problem which no one else has encountered. I have recently bought a 2003 Swift Fairway 390 which the previous owner assured me had just had a new battery. This seemed to be borne out by the fact that the van had been moved from the rear of his property to the front, a quite considerable distance, using the motormover and then put on my drive using the same method. After sitting on my drive for two weeks, the van was taken off my drive using the mover with no problem. Van towed to site in Snowdonia with both 12n and 12s plugs attached, fridge on. Battery condition indicator well in the green prior to hooking up to mains. Everything working OK. On the second night on site, we noticed the 12v lights getting dim and the water pump stopped working. The battery condition indicator was now in the red. Switched everything off and went to bed. In the morning the battery indicator had moved up into the orange, so obviously recovering. Checked for any blow fuses but none discovered. Time to go home, so van hooked up and dragged home. After two hours driving, I got in the van to check if battery was charging through the car and indicator was now well in the green. On arriving home, van was manoeuvred onto drive using motormover and after four days sat on drive, battery indicator is still in the green. It is my assumption that both the 12v and 240v charging systems go through the same charger on the van on the way to the battery. Am I wrong? If so, what is going on?

When connected to the car the onboard charger does nothing. The charge is coming from your cars alternator.

From red to orange overnight is a sign it wasnt charging. It should have gone to the green fairly quickly. Switching the pump or lights on may have it dropping again but it should have been green after a few hours of charging.

As you said the battery recovered it wasnt being charged.

Either your charger isnt working or there maybe a blown fuse?

if the charger has not been charging the battery (for whatever reason) and its been left flat for some time it may have wrecked the battery..

Jasie, you need to press the caravan button on your control panel to bring the battery into circuit. All you 12v lights arei working through the charger unit but not via your battery so your battery will run flat by using your 12v sockets.
