hi all,

my beloved 2-berth caravan is exposed to the elements all yr round. Last August I had an inspection/service done and it was found to have several wet spots - the worst one under bathroom sink - where the verdict was "structural damage occuring..." and a few minor ones at other places.

I have had the caravan for 5 yrs, and found that the spot (as visible inside that is) dries up during the summer and improves in winter if I leave the bathroom door open for ventilation.

Now, the inspector, very kindly gave me a verdict as requested - that he personally would not take apart an old c'van such as this, but eventually buy a new one.

My question is: what do campsite readers think, and what time scale do I have to consider. I have no other wet or mouldy spots inside anywhere as yet.

Thanks,

Barb

With damp it is a question of how much spare time you have to repair the van.Its not really a case of finance, because if you are doing the repairs yourself then the materials can be bought fairly cheaply.A caravan can go on for years with damp and i know people who are just making the best of a bad situation and are just living with it with no intention of effecting a repair. If the damp dries up in the summer and you can live with that then just carry on using your van for as long as possible. But remember that the damp will only get worse over time. and eventually it will be the end of your van because as your inspector says, the structural damage will make it unusable. You cant really put a timescale on it but a rough guess would be two to three more years if the leak gets worse.

The thing about water ingress/damage it can only get worse!
On my caravan after the annual service a couple of weeks ago, there was found to be a slightly higher than normal reading in a top locker. I took the awning rail off to find it was one of the screws (broken and rusted) letting moisture past. My view is if there is a problem with water ingress,to fix it as soon as possible.
Never mind the smell of damp and the mould spores!
