We grabbed ourself a bargain last night and bought an oven off eBay for £40. It's in good, clean condition, with surround, some new copper pipe and connector. All we need is a T-Piece!

Anyway, quick questions...

Do we have to line the cupboard with metal sheets?
Can we "t" off the hob / grill gas line?

Any other tips or info for installing?

Thanks,
Dean & Poppy

Yes there area number of legal issues to comply with before you undertake any work

1. Second hand gas cookers must comply with the Gas Cooking Appliance (Safety) Regulations 1989. Folks are prohibited from selling cookers which do not satisfy these requirements so I assume that you will have evidence that your cooker is compliant. if you don't then don't use it. Just looking at your picture and she doesn't look like she should be endangered.

2. The cooker will need to be checked by a "competent" person to certify that it complies with the law before it is installed

3. The law of the land that fitting of gas appliances has to be undertaken by someone who is on the Gas Safe Register.

http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/

I am assuming from your question that you are not registered, and forgive me if I have taken an assumption too far. If you are not registered then, if you do the work yourself without satisfying the matters set out above, you will break the law and probably invalidate any insurance policy you have on your van. Check with your insurers. Further, you may have difficulty in selling the van in the future if you cannot show that the oven complies with the regs and has been fitted by a registered competant person.

Ok, so let's say i'm going to have it tested and fitted by someone on the register, as luckily, a friend of the family is a Gas engineer.

I still need to know about fitting so i can relay the info to him so it doesn't get messed up.

I'd imagine he knows the regs for domestic purposes, but not too sure on Caravans, etc.

Surley i am not the first to buy a second hand oven and fit it, so i'll await for more replies too.

Thanks for your detailed info & advice.

Good lad..the thing is I know that many folk fit things in vans because its fun to do it but they don't think about the legals....and potential consequences...so just thought I would mention it

Have fun

Lets be careful when we quote the law. Caravans and other touring vehicles fall outside of the Gas Regs. (except when things go wrong!)

Gas Safe engineers may or may not be allowed to work on LPG. What you really need is an engineer who is ACOP Gas certificated, this is a specific qualification to caravans and motorhomes. If you use a Gas Safe engineer they need LPG on their qualification. My advice is to look for a caravan/motorhome engineer and ask if they have their ACOPS. They will have been trained on the specifics for the touring caravan industry.

I hope this helps.

ubuntu1 says "Lets be careful when we quote the law. Caravans and other touring vehicles fall outside of the Gas Regs. (except when things go wrong!)"

I am, and with respect

1. You can't say that the Regs don't apply and then add "except when things go wrong". If they apply when things go wrong they have to apply from the start

2. The Regs relate to gas "appliances"; their sale use maintenance etc. If I could  draw your attention to Regulation 2 this defines an "appliance" regulated by the Regs. It reads

"appliance" means any equipment which is designed or suitable for domestic use in a dwelling, ship or caravan and is designed for cooking by means of the burning of gas, whether or not the equipment has other functions as well and whether it is designed to rest directly on the floor or on a table or other raised surface or to be fixed to a wall or other upright structure or supported by any other equipment, but does not include any equipment which is designed for use out-of-doors or in a tent;"

More a case of lets be careful not to misquote the law. Many folks on here rely on the value of the information on this message board so please don't infer that non qulaified persons are legitimately entitled to undertake work on gas appliances. After all we don't want them parking their van next to ours..

Very valid point, ubuntu1, on ensuring that the "competent" person you employ to undertake work on your appliance is qualified to deal with the type of cookers under discussion on this thread.

Apologies should have read

3. The law of the land that fitting of gas appliances has to be undertaken by someone who is competent and that can be evidenced by being on the Gas Safe Register.

For statics you need to use a gas safe registered person.

Phil may I suggest that you read the relevant gas regulations in detail right through you may then take note that they DO NOT APPLY to private caravans and motorhomes!

Guys - we are misrepresenting the law when it comes to caravans and motorhomes used for touring and not for hire. Caravans and Motorhomes in these categories fall outside of the Gas Regs legislation and therefore Gas Safe is not relevant. The Caravan/Motorhome industry have an approved LPG scheme known as ACOP Gas Certified - this shows the engineer is trained to deal with LPG in touring Caravans and Motorhomes not for hire. There is another level of training which is a Gas Safe engineer with LPG on their ticket who are qualified to work on vehicles for hire and statics.

I know because I'm AcOPS Gas Certified.

Nice one ubuntu1. I think that there has been a bit of a leap here from what has been said to something else. I have simply commented that the Gas Cooking Appliance (Safety) Regulations 1989 apply to the sale of cookers to be used in caravans and offered guidance to the OP to check that the appliance conforms in terms of safety before its installation. Some folks may not be aware of these requirements.

Rune Caster says that the Regs do not apply to private caravans. There are many "Gas Regs" and I believe that Mr Rune is focussed on The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 which do not apply to touring caravans (unless hired for business). (Regulation 2(5)(e)).

Back to the 1989 Regs if you wish for additional confirmation upon their relevance to caravans visit

http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/images/sfy19_tcm9-8342.pdf

or

http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/wirral/bus1item.cgi?file=*BADV614-1111.txt

or any Local Authority Trading Standards web site

It is important to note that the requirements of the gas "Regs" are in addition to, and not in substitution for, the more general requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 which applies to the sites our touring vans visit. The owners of those sites must ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that no one is put at risk from those using the site. (section 3(2)). Its only a small step following a gas related incident for inspectors to take issue with site owners if they have permitted defective gas appliances onto the site. e.g Prosecution in Doncaster (admittedly for privately caravans gving off carbon monoxide) but the prosecution was under the all embracing obligation in section 3(2) (which can easily cover touring caravans) and not under any Gas Regs. Then there were inspections of sites by Health and Safety officials in Wales a couple of years back; etc.

You have a contract with the CC when using their sites and one of the contract conditions reads

"Most caravans and motor homes have Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) systems fitted a standard. We strongly advise that members have their gas system checked by a Corgi Registered fitter annually before use."

There is a raft of legislation addressing various aspects of gas safety, either directly or indirectly, and folks need to deal with their appliances correctly

Phil

(Apologies for the hi jack. Cambridgecockney is right. Advice offered, comments, response and things move on. Apologies)

It might depend on the oven as the one I had in my old caravan had one of these & had no lining fitted around it. It was a standard fitment in the caravan & wasn't put in as an afterthought.

That being said I'd also make sure it has a floor vent under it too like this & after you've fitted the oven get it checked by a professional.

Our oven is similar, but brown, and will be fitted below our grill and hob, which is metal lined above the oven (Grill) but not sides and below.

I'm also going to put a vent in the bottom :)

The only lining mine had was just the base of the grill it had nothing on the sides & slotted into the hole beneath.

Cambridge cockney has said above that their's is lined so you could just line it anyway. The oven & hob/grill in mine were also connected via a T piece which went down to a gas tap on the floor the other tap next to it was for the fridge. That's about all I can remember of mine as it's been a while back. Hope this has been of some help.
