hi we have just removed a plastic vent (sort of type that covers air bricks !) from the outside of our van as we couldnt work out why it was there, any way it is covering a hole in the side of the van the hole had been covered over with silver sticky tape, is there any thing we can use to fill the hole in ? and that will also make it water proof any help would be very much appricated, justs eems the more we look at thevan the more repairs there are to do. Thanks in advance. Tim
I would suggest that you post some photographs to help one of the many experts on this forum to identify to which vent you are referring. (Don't ask me how to do this, I am no computer expert!)
However, it could be a vent that a previous owner has covered to cure a draught. If this is the case, it could be very dangerous to leave it blocked as it may have been put there for a very good reason (carbon monoxide poisoning).
Once you have identified what the vent was for, it may transpire that it is safe for it to be blocked. In it's present state, it would worry me until I found out for sure.
Hi Tim. Is the hole a regular shaped hole ie does it go all the way through to the inside of the van and lined with a wooden frame? Or is it a cut/gash in the outer skin? If it is the former it is ventilation and should be left clear. If the latter it is accident damage and what you have is a common "fix" for small bits of damage. Repairs to the aluminium skin are notoriously difficult to "invisibly mend", and use of a vent cover, or a stick-on reflector is often used. I once used car body filler to repair a hole, and put a union jack sticker over it as paint matching would have been a nightmare. As I said, if it is a proper vent through to the inside don't leave it blocked off.
Hope this is of help.
Pete.
------------- Don't panic!
Hit it with a pointed stick!
Nostalgia's not what it used to be.
hi thanks for the replys and advice,it is a damage cover up and not a ventilation vent. i will try body filler and then put something over it to make it waterproof, i dont really want to put the vent cover back on as it looks awful and out of place. Thanks again ur advice is very much appreciated. Tim
