I agree with any of the aforementioned helpful tips, but because my van has an Alko stabiliser, I finish of with a splash of "clutch and brake cleaner" on a lint free cloth which removes any grease from the towball and stops that annoying sqeak that a greasy ball causes the rubber pads to emit. In fact to remove damp, grit, or any thing else that has built up whilst the ball was installed in its cover I give it a wipe with the cleaner. Its reasonably priced at Halford's or the like. A couple of quid spent lasts me two or more years.
