Hi all,

I've now put in a new rear wall frame, side wall frames, and section of floor (phew!).  I've taken some pics, and will post them all once I've finished off.  I've just ordered some panel adhesive to fix the new insulation and wallboard back in... which led me to a question.

Is wallboard actually better than 3mm ply and then wallpaper?  (£15 a sheet better!) As I'm replacing the whole inside of the van, there's no need to pattern match.  I've no desire to spend money for the sake of it, but is there is a genuine advantage then I'm happy to spend the extra.

1) you can't get 3mm ply easily only 3.6 or 3.8

2) 3mm wallboard is about 30% lighter than 3mm ply

3) the pattern side of wallboard is resin coated

4) you have to wallpaper ply

5) the wallpaper really needs to be good quality vinyl

6) you need a glue that won't be affected by damp (e.g. waterproof PVA)

7) you need loads of patience to get the wallpaper on without the joins showing while using a glue that isn't meant for wallpapering

Taking everything into consideration: price of ply, price of good quality vinyl wallpaper, price of waterproof PVA, amount of time faffing around with wallpaper; yes wallboards at £20 a sheet can be worth the extra expense

One small (inexperienced) voice in favour of plain ply - with no lining paper of any kind. You can spot damp spots when they are small, before they ruin the whole van. If its only a question of aesthetics (which me and my caravan said goodbye to a long time ago) I'd go for this early visual damp indicator any day.

However, I'm not so sure after reading Rune's reasons. Is there a reason why you're best not having bare wood surfaces on the inside of the van?

Actually we have got some bare wood - well not quite as it's polished and we also have wallpaper as well - which is how we found out about the problems with it, but a bit later on we'll be doing a complete website about our project which is a little bit more than a damp repair.

But if you want to have bare wood in your van that is your choice, but really once we (that is you and I and all the other fixit club members) fix our vans we don't need a damp warranty to fall back on as we know we have done it properly in the first place

Now only *IF* I have read this thread before I repaired and replaced with 3.6mm ply

A) didnt realise it was 3mm ply on there , although 3.6 does not seem to have caused an issue

B) Didint realise it was precoated/prepapapered ply ! Phew !

 

ANYWAYS !

I want to wallpaper my PLY , any particular ideas requirements for the paper , including sources

he we papered our ply after we pva,d it i just bought good quality paper from b at q which has a similar design to panels,im in agreement with earlier thread i think it will be easier to spot any water as paper will look wet,hopefully that will be a long way off,and i have seen vans with the panel polished up or varnished not sure which and that looked okay i suppose it depends on the type of van you have good luck with your project,
ps definately better with a paper with no pattern due to curves and slopes inside the van

hi,

I hope nobody minds if i bring this topic back to life but I am in a similar predicament where I'm having to do complete overhaul of wallboards.

i'm also thinking of going down the plywood route. im not all that concerned about having wallpaper. van is 20 years old. fit for purpose is key.

Rune you mentioned that 3) the pattern side of wallboard is resin coated. is this the side that would have wallpaper?

where sells wallboard at £20 a sheet and does said wallboard also have insulation attached?
