Hello,
Have just bought an Esterel 1994.It has a butane regulator and the hoses say both propane and butane. We live in Switzerland and butane not available.Have been advised ok to use propane, but we worried it may be dangerous. What gas do we use.Help.
Propane is perfectly safe. It's just a different type of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) as is butane. Why do you think it is unsafe? You yourself state the hoses are marked propane and butane? If the hoses are rubber and the originals change them as at fifteen years old they themselves are unsafe with any gas. If steel they are OK for up to twenty years old. If rubber and marked with date of manufacture make sure they are no older than five years old. If rubber and age unknown change them anyway. Change the regulator to suit the propane bottle. Go caravanning and enjoy.
not a problem the adaptor may need to be changed.we use both types.the black rubber pipes are only a 12 month life span but orange is 5 years.for all your info see
Will not go into technicalities; broadly speaking, in day to day use in a caravan, Butane & Propane are used in exactly the same way. The main reason for having Propane is that it is useable at low temps. (Butane will not flow efectively at temps below 2-4 degrees C)
These days, vans are fitted with a regulator that will supply either Butane or Propane. Might be a good idea for you to upgrade yours to the current 'Euro' type. Look here
There are two types, the only difference being whether you van has an 8mm or 10mm pipe connector. Any competent caravan service organisation should be able to advise and fit the proper thing for you.
Thank you for all the advice.
Used the Esterel for the first time at the weekend.Used the gas to make loads of tea and am still here to tell the tale. All went well (apart from footie result).
