Just finished an exhausting session, replying to nearly 3000 owners who have contacted us from the Caravan Club, this month alone….since July 2009 over 5,200 owners have registered with www.caravanandmotorhomewindowproblems.co.uk

Two major design faults are being highlighted, 1…. delamination/separation of inner and outer window layers accounting for just under 70% , affecting most manufacturers from 1997 to present.

2….. Inner and outer window layers rubbing together causing internal marking, accounting for 30% of reports affecting some manufacturers from 2004 to present

Here is a list of manufacturers affected in order of the number of responses, the first five each have reports in the high hundreds……….

Burstner
Abbey
Bailey
Lunar
Swift

Coachman
Avondale
Compass
Ace
Sprite
Vanmaster
Sterling
Geist
Eldis
Hymer
Bessacarr
Rapido
Knaus
Fleetwood

Owner responses range from:….. no Dealer interest, even after using SOGA,
dealer denial that there is a problem,
dealers gone out of business,
to no replies to correspondence from the dutch manufacturing company or their UK agents..(a number of dealers have told owners to contact Polyplastic and Miriad direct and state they have no liability)

One manufacturer Burstner, has introduced a 4 screw repair to hold their windows together, but the majority of owners are experiencing water ingress and distortion.

Again we have reports of owners on their 4th replacement due to window rubbing.

This is an interim report, based on initial owner responses, we are working on a standard form which will be sent to everyone, who has contacted us, requesting more detail and an emphasis on dealer replies.

Still a long way to go, but progress is being made……….thankyou to everyone who has commented on this subject, in the forum…..we are always available for unbiased advice…….
Regards Andrew

i spoke to a swift owner not long ago.he had just replaced one window from new (12 month old) and the second was faulty with the same fault, misting in the centre.when i told him it was the panes rubbing together he had no idea because the dealer did not tell him what had caused it.i said get in touch with swift.he had other big problems like the shower needed replacing ect.when i spoke to him a couple of weeks he was full of joy.all his repairs had been done including new windows and shower.there has been many others with the same problem on here.

Does anyone know what went wrong to cause the problem or have they always been like this?

When I checked without dealer he told me there was a Bursner recall on the windows, due to the edge of the widows having a paint finish on edge which was between the layers and it was flaking and causing the separation, he said that our Geist was unaffected. So I was worried that you had Geist on the list, could you elaborate what the problem was with the Geist windows?

I have a UK Spec & layout Burtner S500TS that I originally bought new from MGCaravans in Todmorden. The windows had the 4 screw fix applied a couple of years ago during it's annual service.

Before reading this thread, I hadn't really been aware of the scale of the problem and hadn't had a close look at the windows in my caravan to see whether and to what extent it affected my van. I went to take a few photos of the van in storage earlier today.

One thing that owners need to understand is that under UK law (specifically the Sale of Goods Act 1979), it is the retailer (i.e. the dealer) who is responsible if an item sold proves not to be of merchantable quality. There is little point in chasing Burstner or Polyplastics directly, as owners have no contract with them. An owner's right to redress lies with the dealer.

I had a long chat this afternoon with Martin Gregson, the owner of MGCaravans about the problem. He told me a number of things that I wasn't aware of ......

1) Polyplastics have a web page on which they provide some information about (their take on) the problem. See: http://www.polyplastic-pass.nl/english/venster_reparatie.php

2) His best guess is that around 1000 Burstner caravans in the UK will have been affected by this problem - certainly, he has seen several with delaminating windows. There will, though, be many more motor-homes having similar windows both in the UK and on the continent. A contact at Burstner suggested that if Polyplastics were made to pay the full cost of the repairs, they may go bust.

3) Polyplastics are offering to supply replacement windows at 35% of the normal retail price. This *could* still cost an owner around £1000 to have all of the windows replaced by new - though it's possible that negotiation with the dealer who supplied the caravan might reduce this.

I'm not really sure what my way forward is. I do have the problem. At the moment, it isn't very obvious and doesn't result in condensation inside any of the windows. Even if it does not get worse, I will need to have it fixed at some time, as it will affect the value of the caravan when I come to sell it.

Andrew

I'm not sure whether they are capped on both sides (so I may not be able to tell). I'll have a look next time I go up to the van.

I decided to bite the bullet and pay for discounted windows fitted,I was concerned that, as suggested, if Polyplastic were forced to pay for the total replacement they could go bust and the repair offered by Burstner was ineffective.

Mmm .... the big front one on mine was replaced under warranty in Feb 2008 (or was it 2007), so I guess it'd be a bit less than that for me.   Ponder ...........

Thanks for that informative link Andrew K. It looks from your photos that there is green algae starting to form in the corner within the sandwich of the two window layers, I can only assume that this will get worse in time, and the top one appears to show hairline cracks forming.

Polyplastic is offering a substantially reduced price replacement option with another 2 year guarantee. Are they sure that the original problem is sorted or could it happen again? Was there a particular batch or date when these faults occurred or is it still ongoing?

Dave.

I've just come across these Polyplastics pages too.

This and the follow on page allows you to identify whether your van/motorhome is affected.
http://www.polyplastic-pass.nl/english/index.php

This has details of the Polyplastics offer.
http://www.polyplastic-pass.nl/english/burstner/nieuwe_vensters.php

I knew about the 65% off, but not about the free fitting.
