We arrived in Tewkesbury CC last night after a long leg from the N East.   When I tried to turn the stabiliser wheel it was stuck solid.   I dropped the jockey wheel, lifted the lever and it lifted off the tow ball.   Has anyone any idea what has happened - is it safe enough to still tow??

My theory is that whatever parts do the stabilising have broken/worn but am I right in thinking I still have a conventional (old style) set up working but just not the stabilising bit??

When you say stabilizer wheel do you mean the wheel on the bottom of the jockey wheel which winds down to support the front of the van or the actual towing stabilizer which if it is an alko hitch is part of the coupling which goes on the towball.

Dunc.

I'm assuming from the description that you have an Alko AKS1300 stabiliser head.
Take a look at this link and in particular have a look at the two documents titled "AKS 1300 Ratchet Wheel" and "Problem Solving AKS1300", both of which might cover your problem.

The stabiliser will operate as a standard hitch if the friction assembly won't close against the ball, so you can continue travel but just be aware of the change in handling.

That's brilliant Paul - set my mind at ease knowing I'm not stuck here!  I'm trying to find the correct bit to cary out their advised fix also.  Cheers!
