Hi

I have recently purchased a Swift Challenger which requires some work, including replacing the skylights. I need to make sure Im measuring up for the new ones correctly. Is from the inside, ie the size of the hole? Or from the top?

Hope someone can set us right! New to this!!

Hi NickA25, Welcome to the forum, take skylight out(cover incase of rain) ,measure the skylight unit, lenght, width, depth, and check width of the lip round unit, then measure the aperture in roof, if skylight not removed , measure  form top of van and from inside van, there will be a small difference in the measurements, don't put weight on the roof, use a ladder, and steel measureing tape. hope that helps.

See here http://www.1carpc.co.uk/wcdr/mini-heki-install.htm , remove the vent bottom trim inside the caravan pic 4 , measure the hole in the ceiling pic 5 , also measure the ceiling thickness, you can do this by putting a rule up the gap between the ceiling and roof vent , roof vents come in a few different sizes eg 400mm x 400mm , 380mm x 380mm see here . http://www.leisureshopdirect.com/caravan/ventilation/mpk_rooflights.aspx

Hi just reading measurements on the sky lights. Mine is 37x37 mm interior aperture, and the outer cover lid is 46x46 so large lip on lid , I cannot find a roof light on this planet the same . Caravan is Deffleff’s newline 1993 model . Just need the roof cover replacement but at a loss as what to do.

Perhaps the answer is to replace the entire unit with something like a Mini Heki which is 400mm square. If there is sufficient wood in the mounting frame in the ceiling, removing 15mm all round isn't that difficult if you are handy.

Whenever I have had to cut or enlarge holes in a motorhome or caravan I have always found an oscillating cutter to be far superior to a jigsaw ie easier to use, neater and more precise.
If you have to cut and you don't have one, borrow one.

Is there any point replacing it if it's only 37x37 mm. Don't worry, billions were wasted when we went metric.

This is tacked onto a pretty old post but most skylights are made to pretty standard sizes nowadays at least. You can probably recognise yours from looking at photos of similar units, they will have the dimentions for each type without the need to remove it, then order the correct one, and then wait until it arrivers before fitting.

Often reinforcing woodwork is fitted inside the roof sandwich at manufacture, Bailey were kind enough to send me an image of the roof and all the battens in mine so that I could work out if it was an easy job to enlarge my toilet one to a mini hekki.

Dave.
