Your help would be appreciated please. Our dog whimpers when the indicator or hazard lights are put on when we are towing, though she doesn't do it when the caravan is not on the back.
We have just changed cars and our new one (a Zaphira) seems even louder. So far, we have only hitched it up in the drive to test that everything works. We are taking the dog to France in September and will be towing. Is there any way in which the noise from the box can be silenced whilst towing? I should mention that it is also linked up to the rear sensors but there is a button that switches those off. The dog doesn't seem to mind those.
If I were to wrap something around the box to deaden the sound, would there be a fire risk?
Is it illegal to tow without having the noise?
Has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions as to what I can do please?
I think the law states that there must be a way of knowing that indicators are on and working. I was a bit surprised on my 2009 Sorento that there is no bleep but a little light on the dashboard that pulses on and off when the caravan indicator is working. So I think its OK to have either or. A couple of Vauxhalls I have owned in the past also had dashboard indictors for trailers. The control unit that causes the noise is usually near the rear light cluster so I suppose your dog is sitting quite close to it.
Both EU Law and our National Law require that a car should have a means of confirming to the driver that the indicator lights are working. EC Lighting & Lighting Devices 1981; The Construction and Use Regulations 1986 (as amended) ; and the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989. This may be by means of an auditory device (the bleep) or visual (flashing lights). The system also has to monitor the indicators so that if they malfunction the driver is alerted - The bleeps or flashes go quicker.
Regulation 11 of the 1986 Regs does not state that the indication has to be audible or visual. It simply says that the system has to be “so designed and fitted that the driver when in his seat can readily be aware when it is in operation”. So, OP you may have a little problem if you change from bleep to flash.
If you are keeping your eyes on the road (which you should do) you cannot tell that the indicator is working, hence they always fit an audible device as well as the flashing indicator light. You may need the alternative device to be located where you can see it whilst looking at the road.
So, on the one hand, if you do get stopped and the Police complain that you do not have an audible sound when the indicators are on, you could challenge them to show where it says that it has to be audible. On the other hand if you cannot show that you can tell when the indicator is working, without taking your eyes off the road, you may get a warning of another variety

I rang my local Vauxhall garage this morning and explained the problem. They said that they would get back to me with costs for fitting a light at the front of the car. They did not recommend wrapping the bleeper in something in view of the fire risk, as the unit might overheat. They haven't called me back so I will ring them tomorrow.
I might try fitting a pad of something onto both sides of the cover which fits over the opening where the bleeper is housed and see if the noise is acceptable to our dog. Other than that, does anyone know if anyone sells earplugs for dogs?
Its just a dog training issue. Put her in the car and turn on the indicators. When she barks just shout "Ow" as if you have been bitten. Make it as loud as you can and really pretend that she has bitten you. She will immediately stop barking thinking that she has done something wrong. Always works. Then you say "good Girl" and give her a doggie treat. Repeat regularly even if its only on the drive. They do get the message that silence brings a treat.

Phil, she really is in pain with this noise and she doesn't bark, she whimpers. She is now turned 11 and we had no problems for ten of those years until about a year or so ago when she suddenly started reacting.
I think we have now solved the problem. We have put some tape around the bleep box and this makes it a bit quieter. We then cut out a shape from noise insulation board and lined the inside of the cover that fits over the hole housing the bleeper and associated wiring. We hitched up, put the indicators on and the result is that it is much quieter now and from the front of the car, we can still hear it working. We put Meggie in the back, tried it out and she didn't whimper.
Thanks for your suggestion Neil. It would be a mammoth task to move it forward and quite frankly I wouldn't know where to start. With only a week or so left before we go away, I will leave it as it is now. The decibels are reduced considerably now and the noise insulation board can be removed when we are not towing.
Poor old lass. Maybe on a long holiday with constant use of the indicators she may just get used to it. Maybe a doggie treat everytime the bleeper goes so she associates the sound with a treat. Hope it works out ok

I'm so glad I've just read this post. We brought a caravan and towed it for the first time last friday.
We wondered what the constant beeping was when indicating. Nobody had mentioned this audible warning to us and we thought it was some sort of malfunction!

Can't wait to tell the DH."
The number of folks I've heard say just the same thing. Why don't garages tell you this when they've fitted the towbar?
