We use 6k Calor propane cylinders in our caravan with an automatic switch over for longer trips.   For some time on short trips I have swapped one 6k cylinder for a  3.9k  backup  to cut weight. Until this weekend  when the 6k ran out we have never had a switch over to the small cylinder.

When it did switch we had problems, the heater and cooker worked but the fridge was very difficult to light (we usually find it a pain but this time it took repeated tries to light it). The main problem, and why the fridge needed relighting was the water heater.

The red light came on very shortly after turning it on.  Retying after 5 or 10minutes was no better.  I removed the small cylinder and let some gas out refitting in the 6K position (why the fridge was out). Now it would light up for longer, up 15minutes then the red light again.

Convinced the 3.9 cylinder had “caused “the problems we located a Calor Gar dealer and got a new 6K cylinder. This time on the second start the water heater remained  on as did the fridge.

The 3.9 K cylinder is a number of years old and  the plastic screw bung has been kept in place until used.  Now I don’t know what to do with the 3.9K cylinder, will Calor Gas take it back and if so is it a common problem that “old” gas cylinders can be unreliable and if so I am a bit concerned with changing it for a new 3.9 cylinder that may be as unreliable when needed in the future.

I have used various Calor butane (4.5 and 15Kg) and propane (3.9, 6 and 13Kg) bottles, never has a problem with them in over thirty years. Sounds like you you might have a rare faulty one.

In fact the only gas bottle I have ever had issue with was a Supergas 13Kg butane clip on regulator type, the ball bearing in the bottle valve neck jammed open so once the regulator was removed the gas escaped. Took it back to the dealer (HSS) same day and they exchange it on the spot.

Calor will exchange the 3.9, you don't own it you rent it. Whether or not they will do it for free I have no idea. You will have to ask them.

Just take your bottle to a Calor supplier & they will exchange for a full one for just the price of the contents. £14 for a 3.9kg, I think. It don't matter how old or rusty the bottle is, provided it is recognizable as Calor they will exchange. You can also exchange between certain sizes at no extra cost so you could change it for a 6kg if you wanted.

They have stopped exchanging between sizes.  They only swap like for like now.

Both a friend and myself have tried in the last couple of months and we have both been refused at different dealers.

I have contacted Calor Gas now so will be interesting to see what they say. When we exchanged the 6K propane true to form though the dealer said on the phone they had all sizes that meant they would have them at some stage that day. So when we turned up the “ delivery will be in 30minutes” but they would change the 6K for a small one. So if they have stopped changing sizes its a good thing I didn’t want to try another small one! The delivery was nearer 80 minutes but did get there then!

You can not exchange a 6kg or 7kg or 6kg lite for any other bottle outside of that group, neither can you exchange any bottle not in that group for one of that group but any other size of bottle is exchangeable for another size.

There are some garages around that are not aware that you should not be able to exchange a bottle other than a 6 or 7kg for a 6 or 7kg and will happily do it
