Hi Can any one help.We are new to caravaning DIY.We have a 1995 coachman mirage and have just foundthat the back edge seal has perished so the internal plywood has to be replaced. No matter what we try we can not get the sink cupboard of the wall.We have removed every rivet and screw we can see.has any one got the answer.
I may be wrong cathy but i think it is permament as caravans are built from inside out.Go to you tube and bailley caravans you will see them building a van..
As Jeff has suggested, some of the furniture is fixed by screws from within the body. Firstly you need to establish where these fixings are. Sliding a piece of card in between cupboards and wallboard may work? Failing that, leavering, prodding and general heavy handedness (but not too heavy). Then cut through the screws with a hacksaw blade. Voila
Someone else may be along with a tried and tested method.
Had a look on google cathy if its a 2 berth with the sink and cubboards at the back i dont think,i may be wrong, that you can take this out.If the water is getting in from the handles can you seal the handle and use a demidufier to dry it out.?sorry trying my best.
I think know now cathy what your talking about and if its the same as i had once with the grab handles this is how i did it.Asuming you cant get the cupboard out.
Take off awning rail and other side just high enough to say just above your back window.
look under van,you will see the rear skin has been nailed or screw nailed on remove the mentioned.
Now the hard bit.
lift up the skin carefull taking note that the side walls will over lap it.
Doing this will expose the inner shell it will have straps and sections which will be filled with fibre glass.
Lift up the skin till you see the main crossmember,
where attached to it you will find out how the handles,
are bolted.
At this point i will leave it to you how to fix this
as i cant see for myself whats going on.I can only
presume this is the easiest way to repair your damage
and it is a big job, maybe someone else can advise an other.
I am getting to know so much from you all.I think if i can some how replace the ply then a can attatch handles to this.We have today uncovered the cap that allows us to take off handles.
cathy sorry you have the dreaded damp,we done ours up it was damp everywhere ,we dont have the kitchen at the back of the van like yours ,hopefully once you get the unit out it wont be so hard to put in the new plywood ,you could paper it with nice kitchen paper after you have pva,d the wall and it will look like new ,and individual to your taste, good luck with your repair its worth doing in the long run,and gives your caravan a new zest to keep going for more years ahead good luck look forward to seeing the finished results
WOW.just had achance to see the real damage.Took the paper off the back wall and as we suspected the damp has rotted the support shell. The damp goes from top to bottom but as we thought only about 12inches across,The real shocker is that the whole of the side wall from door to corner is soaking. The floor is ok.
We have stripped it off and will see if any of it dries out.
We are sealing it though in case more water gets in.The door will be the next to be resealed.
Are we down hearted???????????you bet.
But as i said before its an adventure and i am sure it will be worth it.
it will be worth it cathy ,and you have to treat it as an adventure or it will eat away at you,at least your floor isnt rotten ,ours was and every batton had to be replaced it was hard work, hope it all dries out for you and you can get it back to normal soon,im glad you caught it before it was a total wreck keep up the good work and the spirits lifted
