This is twice ive saw this, people who have converted an electical extention cable into a hook up cable.Ive just returned from a week away and the guy across from us done this only to find when he tripped the power point his cable had melted. These extension cables you buy are not meant to carry high voltage electricty through them for long periods and incase no one knows, not pulling whats left on the drum off, the coils of cable acts the same way how heat is made on an electric fire. Caravan hook up cables are more thicker to carry a larger current but, although they do i would not recommend them being left on a drum as i too have felt a slight heat from them.
when a cable is wound up, it creates an electrical field, getting rather warm, some case`s starts to melt even off the drum cable just wound up on the floor is dangerous,Spread the cable in long lenghs if you have to much cable left over from the EHU point.

Its not a hangover, its wine flu!
A warning for everyone I think. When I was younger I worked in a computer room on shift work and one night we thought we could smell smoke, after lifting some floor tiles we found the cause, a 25m extension reel that was only using a few metres of cable with the rest still on the drum. It was lucky that the room was manned 24 hours a day as we then found out that the smoke detectors hadn't been connected up at all! Since then I unwind my cables if using them for longer than a few minutes.
The first drum of rolled up cable i saw on a campsite did burst into flames it was lucky for the owner for if we did not spot it or,if there was nobody about, god knows what would have happened with kids about.
A scruffy pair turned up in a battered old VW camper when we were in Devon and connected a normal reel extension to the EHU then unwound around 10' of cable then threw the reel into the back of the van which was piled high with clothes etc.
They did not look the types to accept advise so we left it to the site staff, they had gone the next day.
I have melted one of these reels myself by running two hot air guns for around half an hour drying a floor, made a right mess inside.
