Hi there everyone.

 

Just starting a Huge project.

I'm gutting my old Monza, to totally rebuild it.

Since I'm a greenie...I would like to hear your points on this.

I'm the kind of guy that....if I don't have anything to do, I'll find something, and this time my dear ole Monza stood in my way.

I have sourced all material etc, and decided to take it back to the Aluminium skin, increase the insulation thickness by 5 mm, and rebuild the interior. Also discovered that the wood at the bottom of the door, came out looking like potting compost, so there seems to be a dampness problem.

Give it a few months, and I hope to get the wee "soul" a new lease of life.

 

This now brings me to a point I feel I have to point out.

Aluminium corrosion. Having had a small area under a sidewindow (blisterring of paint work).....

Are there any "cheap" solutions to treat this problem.?????

I'm working in the Aircraft Maintenance industry, and so far I have used Alodine / AluChrome, then given it a coat of an Etching polymer based primer (PPG Aerospace).

I have found this is the only paint that will stick to Aluminium for a long time, and is easily painted over.

Sorry I can't help, but just thought I'd write to say a big welcome to UKCS.  You sound as if you've got your work cut out, but I guess, judging by your comments you will get there in the end.  There are several on here who have undertaken large renovation projects.  Hope someone will be along soon to help.  In the meantime, it might be worth looking around Wizard's site.  I'm sure there are others too.

Got a major question regards this.

And it comes down to LIMITATIONS........Like Extra frame weight etc.
Fair Enough my Monza is only 875 KG plus extras......and I'm Towing with a
Mazda 6....So far it works out ok ..Weight Ratio
But Renewing wall panels, increasing insulation and other Mod's WILL add Xtra weight on the frame.
Are there any limitations on what I can do? (Apart from my own)

Also I've noticed, since moving to this country and taking up caravaning, there are 
NO such thing as an MOT for caravans. I feel it should be a compulsory test for even our beloved caravans, Gas Check, Breaks, tyres, Corrosion, Dampness...the list is long, but it would make our roads a lot safer.

Will try to post pictures once I truly get into tearing my "van" apart, before and afters so to say.

Somewhere on your Monza you should have plate with the Maximum Axle Weight on it. As long as you don't exceed that you should be ok, so if you increase the weight of the van, you reduce its capacity accordingly. You already have wallboards, so replacing them isn't going to add anything but if you start beefing up the framework you will add weight.

I tow with a Mazda 6 too. If yours has a kerbweight of 1300kg then the reccomendation is that you don't tow anything that exceeds 85% of that, so your fully laden/beefed up van shouldn't weigh more than 1105kg. This gives you 230kg to play with - if your M.A.W. allows it, and must include all your kit - battery, gas bottles, the lot.

Your aluminium corrosion treatment sounds useful. The only advice I have read on this is to double the area up on the inside then fill it and paint it outside. Otherwise the advice might be to put a reflector over the area - or an extra vent.
