I have a problem with de-lamination of the floor of my 92 Elddis, I know that the repair of this is well covered on this forum and I intend using that advice during the repair. My problem is, the carpet is original and is going to have to be cut out, what should I do to re-fit the carpet? would it be best to stick it down with double sided tape or should I edge the carpet somehow and leave it removeable... help please!!
I think it be best to cut the carpet out of your van and use it as a templet, Put the new carpet in the van, and use carpet spray adhesive, If your budget can stretch bead the carpet.
------------- Roughing it in style at Calloose caravan and camping holiday park nr St Ives.(seasonal pitch)
Its not a hangover, its wine flu!
I think a better job is to have loose carpet-far easirer to keep clean. You may find a local dealer with off cut and a machine that can bind the edges once you have shaped them.
Use tape, not spray adhesive, spray adhesive gets the hole floow so if you cock it up it is going to be a right swine to remove and replace, also the fumes (when working in a caravan) will accumulate and give you a vary nasty headache.
Go round all the edges with the tape, remove the backing and then put carpet down, work from edge under window and work back along towards the rear of the van. Use heavy weights such as filled water containers to keep pressure on so it does not move,
------------- Just remember, if it is older than yours, smaller than yours but next to yours, there is probably no credit owing on it...
I had the same problem with my old Abbey Somerset. I cut the carpet out, to use as a template. The old carpet was foam backed and it had perished. Repaired floor and just laid new carpet down, it never moved and could be taken up if required (but never was) just Hoovered. However it was felt backed not foam rubber.
My O/H used to be a floor layer he said tape will be fine just trim any loose threads with a pair of scissors . Lay it in place first then roll back half carpet and stick then same with outher end. Hope this helps
Note, you may want to put a waterproof membrane down, stops water seeping up through the bits where the floor panels join up and soaking the carpet during transit, then you should buy a staple gun and staple the membrane down, then the carpet can be taped onto the membrane or stapled again. The membrane is cheap enough, just get the plastic that goes under laminate floors, thats what we used!

Hi Graeme,
Had a go at replacing some carpet, I decided to make it so that the units (mostly front seating) held it in place and all that was needed was the odd staple. Have a look to see how it turned out. It is a satisfying job to do as it transforms the interior.
