Any ideas on a repair to a small crack which has appeared in our washroom sink close to the plug hole.

our shower did the same what i did on our old van was to fit a larger drain fitting.take your old fitting to a plumber and ask for one.it will mean filing the opening until it fits snug.when fitting use a good sealer.the larger fitting should cover up the cracks.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

You could buy a Resin kit from any Motor factors such as Halfords providing that the sink or wash basin which I presume it is, is plastic. Also you haven't said if the crack goes through to the underneath or not. If the crack is all the way through then the repair will be slighly different.

Firstly, remove the plug and drain pipe assembly from beneath the wash basin. Open up the crack slightly with a small triangular file and blow away any remaining dust. Read the contents of the Resin and do what it says on the tin. Apply to the damaged area with a small brush so that it slightly stands proud. Wait till the Resin is really hard before re-working. Using some medium sandpaper, carefully sand down the repair but before the very end, finish off with some very smooth 'wet and dry' paper and apply with water for a smooth finish. If the crack is all the way through then you will need to apply some fibreglass matting underneath first to build on a foundation and then follow the same procedure. When finished, make sure that the hole is also clear af any remaining hardened Resin. Basically, the repair is identical to GRP body panels. However, the only problem is that if the sink is coloured it may be difficult to purchase the correct colour spray to match. Other than this I think the only option is to replace with a new wash basin.

You could try applying some bathroom sealant but I think this would only last as a temporary repair only.

Hi Phil, I thought that Creeping Crack was for use to seal internal fractures such as water pipes and tanks etc. I didn't think it was designed for external repairs such as GRP repairs.

by chance I have just recommended capt trolleys in another thread. Yes it can indeed be used outside even in tough marine environments. No good caravanner should be without it in their spares box!
