Assuming that the doors are made of wood,break the glaze and key the surface by rubbing down with fine steel wool. I think it is safest to apply a coat of sealer primer before continuing with further finishing. After that it edepends on what you want to pay. A good quality household undercoat and top coat(gloss or eggshell) will do, or go for an enamel. Two part paints(resin and hardner) will give a really tough finish. With flush doors a mohair roller will give a good finish, but panel doors would be better spreyed. You can use a brush, but make sure you are good! If you like a wood finish, consider paint and grain in a light colour--ash or similar. Worth a thought. Oh and by the way, take the doors off to do the work.
