I have had 2 trips away and the toilet flush has been intermittent so I have decided to change the pump as I have already freed it off once. One of the problems is the top tank is full of black grime is this caused by the previous user not using flush fluid?
The Thetford kits come with very good instructions, but I have put this on here so folks can see what is involved and hopefully try it them selves rather than paying out for an easy job to be done.
So firstly drain the flush tank. Because I will be flushing it too I have filled the aqua roll and connected the pump and put the water heater on
Lift out the toilet roll holder
Its pretty grimy in there
Unscrew the clamp holding the pump in
Lift out the pump with its cable and hose
Snip off the pump and bare the wires
New pump kit
Crimp the wires together (brown to brown) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SLID THE PUMP CLAMP AND SHRINK WRAP DOWN THE CABLE FIRST
Heat the shrink wrap to seal the joint
That was easy wasnt it! Now the water will be nice and hot so using the sink mixer I filled the tank with WARM not hot water and have tipped in Fendox tank cleaner
I filled it right up and left it till the morning
Hopefully over night its done its magic, so drain it off it to a bucket
Once the tank is empty place the pump back in having connected the hose (push fit) and replace the holding screw.
The cable sits on a little clip above the water line.
Push the roll holder back in.
Well its not spotlessly clean but it is an awful lot better than it was, so I hope the pink stuff keeps it cleaner now and the pump lasts.
So why did I tip the fendox into a bucket? Firstly so I could see any debris it took out and there was a lot of big black bits. Secondly I placed my waste hog under the shower and tipped one bucket load down, then the same with the sink. This will stop any smells apparently. Thirdly it has now also cleaned out my waste hog! so I have given it a good shake and left to soak before rinsing down a drain.

Pictures are good ,if someone had to do the same thing . Very handy as pictures paint thousand words.'Shows' them how..
I had black bits from the flush water when we got our van last year.
Others suggested that it was the thetford pink stuff that actually caused the bits in the firt place.
I cleaned the tank out with a warm solution of household soda crystals, flushed loads of black bits out and have used elsan fluids since .
No more black bits .

you can also use milton or fendox from fenwicks.

I wonder if any one can help. We have got a problem with our flush. The pump appears to be working but nothing comes out (no its not empty). It has been suggested that it may be the solanoid??? Any thoughts and suggestions would be welcome.
If the pump is working it is probably a hose that has come off. If you look on the Thetford website there are diagrams for most of their systems. Check that nothing has cracked or split due to freezing over the winter months.

Not quite the same, the difference between human poo & baby calf poo one could be Ah!!! the Yuk!!
There is a lot of it about on a farm!
Back to your earlier post the tank i was working on holds the flush water, and so the grime in there is like an algae and not human waste!

A good soak in Puriclean should shift most of the algae and biofilm but as with any other chemical treatment it might be a good idea to check with manufacturer first. Thetford are doing a water treatment chemical that they are marketing for fresh water systems so that might be a better bet but I have not tried it yet. If anyone does try the Thetford stuff can they let me know how effective it is.

Great pics and info, i too want to remove pump, but to see if the impeller is stuck, do i leave the electrics on when doing this, no men about so have to try myself before calling the caravan medic.
Yes the 12v cable and water pipe should be long enough for you to be able to turn the pump around and check the impeller, but in any case the pipe is a simple connection and at the worst if you have to completely remove the pump to replace it it is a simple job. There is loads of good info on the Thetford website detailing diagnostics and repairs.

Cheers Joyce
before you go to the extent of removing the pump.give it a good soak in a strong solution of milton overnight and try the pump again in the morning.it works some times as they get clogged up with algae and slime. check fuses

Hi again, just to update, it was the fuse, flush working again and i also cleaned tank out with milton overnight and oiled the impeller. Great job done.
