We have just been away for a test night in our first caravan (swift charisma, 2003) and appear to have a couple of issues and I would be grateful for any advice.
The first is that when plugging in the Whale water pump, this seems to run and run (15-20 mins before being disconnected). I believe the hot water tank was full as water would come out of the hot and cold taps. What should cut out the pumping? Is there anything else that needs to be done? Did it just need leaving longer? I stopped it as it suggested in the manual this should be run for 15 mins max. I presume one does not need to turn the pump on and off in the van every time water is required!
The second issue is that before leaving the site I thougt i would test the master trip switch; this tripped as expected but I am unable to flick it back up to reset it (disconnecting the mains lead does not to help). I know some household ones are spring loaded an need holding in the oposite direction for a few seconds first but this does not appear to be like this.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks.

if you have no leaks check the pressure valve switch.if you have a leak the pump will run forever until water has gone.find the pressure switch after setting up as normal, make sure barrel is full.turn the pressure switch fully clockwise.the pump will not run.open a tap and slowly turn the switch back on anti clockwise very slow until you have a flow of water and the pump has JUST started to click.close tap.pump should only run when tap is opened and the pump light is on.if you have the pump running and a green light showing on the control but no water then you have an air lock.remove pump complete add to water first and the into the van.if you have micro switches on your taps (wires going to the tap) it is possible after winter that a micro switch is stuck in the on position after leaving taps open for winter.if so replace it.check also you have closed your drain valve or water will just run through to the outside.i forgot one time in the rush to get awning up.should only take 5 minutes to fill the system with water.

with the trip if it will not go back then you could have a faulty element in the water heater tripping it out.does the water get hot on electric???

if you have micro switches on your taps (wires going to the tap)

Micheal,
Do all modern taps have micro switches or are there some without?

Sorry chris don't mean to hijack your post.

as far as i know there are still the same ratio of supply of both types of tap systems.if you have no wires then the water system is pressurised.

Michael, thanks for the response. The drain was definitely closed as I initially though this could be the problem. I will locate the pressure switch and follow your suggested approach. The green light you mention, is this just the light on the main control panel that illuminates when the main pump switch is on? (If so I guess it is the red light on ours).
The issue with the trip switch is now resolved, it was just extremely stiff; I am sure the force required to switch it back on it only just shy of the breaking point of the plastic in the switch :-)
Thanks again,
Chris.

Hi Chris,

I too went on our maiden voyage this weekend and had the exact same problem with the Whale water pump. The caravan manual was useless on the subject. In the end I fathomed out that if you have microswitches you just don't bother putting the pump on at all. Simply open a hot water tap until water comes out, slose the tap and turn on your water heater. When it's heated you can just get hot water out of the tap as expected and the pump activates to pump more cold into the bottom of the heater, which then heats up. Simple!

Took me hours of running the pump and trying to get it to stop before sussing this out!

Marc

erm....that is rather confusing! How can the pump run if you have not turned it on?

Just to clarify.....there is a switch that turns on the power to the pump, this must be on for it to work.

Then the actual running of the pump is controlled either by the microswitches on your taps (if fitted) OR by the adjustable pressure switch if no microswitches are fitted.
