Sorry Bill, using other than aluminium tie rods, ie, stainless steel is no good, ally expands over 4x more than steel and this will keep stressing the top of the tank around the nut and seal, over a short time the nut will come loose and the heater will soon leak.
A 20 inch steel tie rod will expand 0.014" on a 60C rise in temperature, the tank though will grow 0.48" That's almost 1mm difference and akin to frost damage, albeit minor, but over and over again as the tank heats up and cools down.
Someone should tell Henry about that as I understand they are now using stainless!... tears before bedtime there I fear LOL
Repairing corrosion holes in tanks depends on how it's done, weldings no good as that destroys the internal coating.
I've been repairing tanks using several different techniques since they first disappeared about 6yrs ago, I asked every customer to report back if they ever leaked and not one has.
This last 2yrs or so since they stopped altogether, I've settled on yet another method which I'm now 99.9% sure is as good as a new tank or infact better in the area of the repair.
And I wish you luck finding any source for new tanks
