trying to sew on popper tape on my new caravan curtains and my thread keeps breaking.....have spent the last hour screaming at my sewing machine and getting nowhere. can any kind person tell me what im doing wrong. have tried sewing with an ordinary needle and also a denim needle. failing that whats the alternative way of hanging them up??
Although you are using the correct denim needle you need to use a stronger machine cotton which is thicker and stronger than hand cotton to deal with the application of sewing velour material to plastic.
ever tried a chandlers shop for sail cloth sewing. As tango has said ask you local sewing shop for much stronger thread. They are rarely on show. But otherwise if they do not have or do it, Then google it. I have sail cloth cotton and its very strong. Maybe too strong for the machine. As I did it by hand but then I have no machine anyway.
a friend has suggested nylon thread...the clear stuff. am thinking of trying that. if all else fails i will just have to use curtain wires but i would rather use the tracks that are there.
i just love ukcampsite....so many lovely people to give advice ...luv ya all!!!

Hi, That is what my curtains popons are sewed on with originaly,do not know where to get it though. I just used good quality thread and a denim needle, run slowly throught machine, set pressure foot to left/right of the needle, that works.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
I had to repair and replace some popper tape on my van curtains, I used a denim needle and clear nylon thread, however, I gave up in the end with the sewing machine as thread kept breaking, jamming etc. So, I ran the popper tape through the machine down each edge with the denim needle to puncture little holes top and bottom. I then sewed them manually with a loop stich, didnt take long at all and the pre made holes really helped.
Take out the plastic poppers from the plastic tape
NOW throw the plastic tape in the bin. go to your local haberdashery shop for 1" wide curtain tape this has small hole in it to push the poppers through.
Now sow this tape to your curtains no more broken needles or thread
what a good idea, will try that on next set of curtins.
