Could anybody please leave me advice on how you clean out your on board water tank.

We are going away at Easter, so thought it will need a clean after being stored over the winter.

Is it just as easy as running Puriclean through the system.

Thanks for any help

If you don't drink the water in the van, which we don't, why bother. Anything in it will just flush out when you first use it.

Yes, just as easy as that, Dorset Paul!

I use the milton sterilizing tabs from the chemists. Fill full and add as many tabs as it needs for the volume of water, pump up to the tap filling the pipes, leave for at least an hour, pump out. Then I usually flush through a few times with clean water, leave the last lot in for an hour then drain. Then I air dry my water container as I don't have an onboard tank.

I'm all for not fetching separate drinking water when I have a system for not doing it!

We normally use the water in the van. Most sites drinking water is absolutely fine.

It's the little bits (of gunk) that I'm trying to get rid of.

If you take a look at a previous thread of mine. We got gippy tummies from our aquaroll andthe company that sells puriclean told me I had developed a biofilm in the tank its colourless and has a slight slimey feel to it. This slime acts as food for bacteria and soon spreads into your clean water system. Puriclean cleans and disenfects and is not harmful to your on board parts. Unlike milton which is corrosive and can do harm especially your hot water tank.

Actually just looked up Puriclean and they sell it at Halfrauds, £2.99 for 100g, which will clean up to a 90L tank - I think that's cheaper than sterlizing tabs anyway!
Mehthinks (as it's effervescent) that it could just be bicarbonate of soda. Does it list the ingredients on the label? In the interests of science and all that.

I've heard it said that milton tabs/solution can damage onboard stuff, but I don't know anyone who uses it who has ever had any damage. I do know however, that it also treats biofilm - on the inside of babies plastic feeding bottles.

People say that they don't drink the water from their on board water tank or barrels so they don't bother sterilising them BUT it would be interesting to know just exactly how they clean their teeth. They must put water in their mouth at least so sterilising is important under any circumstance in my view. Anyway, I think that sterilising with Puriclean could be sufficient myself actually but I would tend to leave in soak over night to be on the safe side with probably just a bit stronger solution for peace of mind.

Tango 55 Just do what it says on the box and you will be fine. On my recent thread about this subject I tried to explain that I did exhaustive research on this. I found at the time Puriclean was the only chemical that you could use and safely drink the water. However Truma have recently introded their own stuff, but dont know how good they are.
Dorset Paul dont use milton as it wont get rid of biofilm and for those who say well its good enough for babies bottles yes it is but you also use bottle brushes. I dont think you can get aquaroll brushes or on board tank brushes. Trust me on this stick with Puriclean - I am not a biochemist but know this to be your answer.

I did extensive research too and my philosophy is exactly the same as yours Chalkie 56. I avoid Milton now as well and use nothing except Puriclean as Milton contain a harsh chemical that can damage caravan water systems plus it doesn't detroy bio-film like Puriclean does.

Use Puriclean cause' it really does pay, to maintain your health and keep the bugs at bay!

Never hurt us in 35 years of vanning. We are all too fussy about things like this. Cleaning teeth doesn't mean you have to swallow it and what do you think is in the water anyway to cause you harm. If the tank and water containers were left empty and with the lids off the they will have dried out. The Black Death dried out years ago!!

My Dad says exactly the same, Jonks. They used to carry drinking water carriers and only use the onboard tank for washing, etc., when they were using on onboard tank in a MH. But I still wonder whether half of the gippy tummys they had over the years was down to that, rather than food that 'disagreed with them'! After all the veg is cleaned in the tapwater, the meat rinsed in the tapwater, etc.

I insisted on sterilizing the tank in their caravan when they got it as they are getting too old to be constantly running to the tap for drinking water in small containers. And I can't be bothered either! LOL!

No reflection on your post though, John, each to their own. And if tanks are air dried, then really no bacteria should grow in them. On board tanks are a little more difficult to air dry properly.. I'd just rather be safe than sorry.

I just had my Conway Cruiser serviced and the guy who did it treated the system with Truma Aquastar 3 cleaner which is £7.50 for ten sachets of which each treats 50L. This was the stuff he recomended and also backed up the don't use Milton as it is harmful to the internal components of the Truma water heaters. He also advised  that the use of Milton will invalidate any warranty claim with Truma and they can and do test for its presence on any claims.

If your water system is Truma based it kinda makes sense to use their own cleaner as it is designed for that job.
