Hello, I have an old Bucaneer, not worth paying a thousand or so for a respray so I'm considering painting it myself... I don't want it to end up looking amateurish and awful so I'm wondering if anyone on here had ever done this and if they have any tips or indeed photos??!

Paint it with coach paint the stuff that they use on buses and lorries and use a foam roller.Do not paint it on a hot day .It will give you a better finish than house hold paint.

Should I thin it with anything and is one roller type better than another.

as jeff said a 4"foam roller will give the best finish. and use the best brushes (new) you can get "long pure Bristle" Hamilton type available as is all the gear except for paint from Screwfix. practice on a sheet of hard board first (smooth side. a sheet will cost about £15 better than messing the van with wrong mixture.  use 30"sections to get different finishes. RePaint was always a good one to hand paint with used to get it from car spares shops that sold paint. you will have to google auto paint shops. it is a lot dear than house paint but will be worth it. also try car spray firms ask how much to mix a colour for you to use. should cost about £60 cash for paint mixed right with hardners if needed. they will advise. just ask a small one man firm. one coat may be enough.

Hi you need Coach Enamel ( Brushing ) and the brushstrokes will flow out.. I used to use Tekaloid but don't know if you can still buy it .. All the work and indeed the standard of finish will be in the preparation.Grease free, clean surfaces are a must.. Also as said Pure Bristle Brush and Sponge Roller and you'll be Gleaming in no time ...please post some pics

 Hubbys just done our van with a good qulity extirior paint. and a sponge rolleer I was supprised how good its come out. the most inportnat thing is masking of take your time doing it and a good qulity undrecoat aswell we only did the bottom 3rd but took a few days to do it very carfully and now shes fab the colour wont be to your tast but here a pic anyway

We used Dulux gloss on Holi and had no streaks at all.

OH thinned it down with petrol so that it would go through the spray gun.
We have sprayed several of our cars using this method and it works very well.
It cost me £85 to paint my Mini and the caravan (see my image gallery)

What ever paint you chose dont paint it on a hot day as using a roller will cause bubbles to appear,or a windy day or an evening where there is loads of midges etc about as they will stick it..

Hello :-)
I have a Fleetwood Caravan, and am also painting it. I am aware the side panels are aluminium, and the front back and top are plastic.
Did you sand the plastic panels?
Do you need to sand the sides even if the surface is already rugged?
Did you use the same primer for all?
Did you use an etcher and then a primer?
Or is an etching primer enough?
