Hi I am new to caravanning I bought my first caravan 2 weeks ago and we went out in it for the first time this weekend. The caravan is an ABI Ace airstream from about 1993.
It all seemed to be going so well which is always a bad sign, and sure enough it was.
Our water pump is is a Truma one. I managed to get a new housing for it before we left because it was leaking water where the filter screwed in because there was a split there.
When we first used it the pump worked and only switched on when I opened a tap. However at some point during the weekend it decided that staying on was a better option and the thing wouldn't turn off and to rub salt in, it then decided not to pump any more water.
The 12 volt indicator had dropped down to nearly zero, the lights were dim although the electric hook up was fine. The mains were working with no problem at all.
The charger unit was switched on and I measured 10 volts across the terminals of the battery, which was probably being damped down by a fault somewhere or had developed a fault all of it's own. I then noticed that the 12 volt charge lead going to the battery was a bit on the warm side so I decided I didn't have the time, tools or spares to be able to do much so I switched off the 12 volt system. We relied on gas and mains for the last day.
I have an HND in electronics (Albeit I haven't done any electronics apart from guitar amplifiers for yonks) but I understand the electrical systems involved here but I don't know what they are exactly because I don't have any circuit diagrams. Anyway before I go diving in and ripping everything to bits does anyone already know what the culprit is likely to be?
Sounds like you have ( at a guess ) charger failure , first thing to check would be the inline fuse / and the internal charger fuse. And tap microswitch failure ( you can tell if you have a microswitch system as you'll have wires going to the underneath of the taps ) . If your pump has run continously for some time you may also find that has failed . The warm wire i suspect was caused by the voltage dropping , this caused a increase in amps to try and send power to the lights etc .
Yes Wizard, thank you, I suspected the reason the cable that connects the battery to the charger getting warm is due to drawing too much current, which is dragging down the potential difference or otherwise known as damping. I had no idea how the taps turn on the tap. So thanks for that I wasn't sure if they were activated by switch action at the tap or by some water flow sensor.
You may well be right about the charger as I have not disconnected anything yet. Although a new charger doesn't sound cheap does it?
I suspect once I disconnect the charger from the battery I'll know what the state of play is with it.
The pump being on continually obviously isn't good and I was hoping that the pump not having enough current applied to it would be the reason it wasn't working because although the pump wasn't pumping it was making a noise.
Anyway I have got my caravan parked in my mates garden so that I can attack it tomorrow. I don't have access to mains where it is stored.
I suppose a circuit diagram would reveal what is actually involved and also where these tap switches all terminate at.
Where would I get one from, any ideas?
if you have a pressurized system ie.no micro switches or wires to the tap.then it could be the pressure switch has failed or needs adjusting.or if you have run out of water the pump would not stop running as it is trying to build up and maintain pressure.if this so the pump will burn out after some time. odd times a micro switch if not used for a long time can stick in the on position.this would also make the pump run non stop. pressure switch from wizards page.to adjust undo the nut screw all the way in the centre screw .open a tap and screw out centre bit slowly until you have water flowing and it is just started clicking.close tap.tighten lock nut.

Thank you David and Michael, I won't know what triggers the pump until tomorrow. I have a vague recollection of hearing/feeling a click when I turned a tap so looking more towards a microswitch set up.
Anyway, I'll get on the case tomorrow afternoon sometime and report back then.....:)
not sure if this is same problem but last winter. i was on a local site,and had very simular problems to you.
i 12v gage dropped when using water pump and it carried on pumping at all times.as soon as i turned power to pump off the 12v gage shot back up.
this was in turn telling me my battery was fine etc.so i striped pressure valve down cleaned and put back tested pump on another caravan etc this worked fine.
solution was found when a fellow camper told me 240v wasnt very good and may not even be 240,i charged battery with jump leads from car and worked perfect.
ive not had any problems since other than when my 12v power supply dropps
double check the battery because if it has suffered from sulphation although fully charged at first can loose power fast when used.the battery can become hot and lead to hot leads,at worst explode.this usually happens when the battery has been discharged for some time and can suffer from internal short circuit.also when this happens you tend to blame other items used for the loss of power.a common problem when stored over winter.

Thank you Jaysere and Michael. The 12 volts indicator stayed low irrspective of the pump switch being on.
I like the sulphation theory in one way because that will be easier to deal with albeit the most expensive probably.
I'm not sure if it all ties up with the pump being on continuosly though.
Initially the battery was fully charged when I first bought the caravan 2 weeks ago and it has been delivering a supply to various lamps etc since then when I have been messing around with the caravan getting it ready.
As I said I'll have a look later this afternoon when SWMBO comes home and I can get the car back and go up to my mates house where it is parked at the moment.

I dunno either but I doubt if the pump relys on a regulated supply. I would imagine it isn't that sophistaicated although I could be wrong, as that wouldn't be a first either... :)

agree it should run slower.check it still runs wired to a battery.
